And the winner is ... Bill and Hillary Clinton. Don’t you love it.

No matter what disaster or tragedy strikes near the Clintons, it's always one of their friends or close supporters who takes the hit.

Maureen Dowd once noted that if you’re a Clinton friend you either end up dead or in jail.

Perhaps we should modify that statement for Al Gore, who will not only be out of office but will be finished politically. DOA.

Who benefits from Gore’s political death?

Well, the Clintons, of course.

Al Gore would never have pursued this election had he not had the strong, quiet backing of Bill Clinton.

It’s been the talk of the Beltway for weeks that one reason Bill wants Al to continue in his pursuit of the presidency is to finish him off politically.

If Al doesn’t get the Oval Office now, which looks like an accomplished fact, he will never be a viable candidate for the presidency.

With Gore out of the picture, Hillary Clinton would then become the front-runner for the Democrats in 2004.

"Go, Al, go!" the Clintons are chanting, as Gore makes a fool of himself.

An Arkansas insider told me this week that both Clintons will also benefit if Gore doesn't win, for another good reason.

We know that the Democrats have poisoned the political waters to such a degree that Bush’s position and ability to govern will be significantly undermined.

It is difficult to imagine Bush or a shaky Republican Congress, during this acidic political climate, launching investigations into Clinton administration wrongdoing.

The Clintons will be off the hook for eight years of scandals, and Hillary will stand to gain if Bush falters during the next four years.

President Hillary? Don’t laugh.
