Rear curtain sync for Nikon FM

greenspun.com : LUSENET : B&W Photo: Creativity, Etc. : One Thread

I was recently given a Nikon FM. I was wondering if this camera is capable of the 'rear curtain' flash sync FX. I do not have a Nikon dedicated flash. I do have some Vivitar 283's and a Novatron strobe unit.

Any help would be appreciated.

thanks,

chuck k

i have an fm2, and its not...so i assume the earlier versions dont do it either...i think you need an electronic shutter for that, but im not sure...

No, I can confirm that the FM definitely doesn't have rear curtain synch.
You'll just have to be creative and get the subject to move backwards, or pan the camera forward after the flash. We all had to use tricks like that, before namby-pamby gimmicks like rear curtain synch were invented.

I remember seeing someplace a little electronic gizmo which would delay the flash so that it would fire just before the rear shutter curtain would release. Can't remember where I saw it, though.

There was a home-brew rc-sync project written-up in the sadly- departed Camera&Darkroom magazine sometime in the early '90s.
