The Balkanization of America

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unk's Wild Wild West : One Thread

Dems against Repubs, black against white, fat ballet dancers against skinny ballet dancers, Rosie O'Donnell against Charleton Heston....do I really need to go on? I just got off the phone with my brother, he hung up on me while we were engaged in bitter political debate, hee hee, it even turns brother against brother!

Disheartening to say the least, what this country needs is a good Pearl Harbor attack, maybe some invading mutant ninjas from outer space even, to help us realize that we are all in this together.

Will we see a civil war or a coup de'ta? Geez. First the California power crisis now this. Where's Decker when you need him.

FLORIDA CHIEF JUSTICE DECLARES 'UNPRECEDENTED CONSTITUTIONAL CRISIS'

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - The chief justice of the Florida Supreme Court (news - web sites) on Friday said the court's decision to order presidential election recounts ``propels the country into an unprecedented and unnecessary constitutional crisis.''

Chief Justice Charles Wells wrote in a dissenting opinion that by ordering the recount the four justices who did so created ``imponderable problems...

``I have to conclude that there is a real and present likelihood that this constitutional crisis will do substantial damage to our country, our state, and to this court as an institution,'' Wells said.

The court's 4-3 decision reversed a trial judge's ruling that Al Gore (news - web sites) was not entitled to the hand recounts with which he sought to reverse the razor-thin lead by which George W. Bush (news - web sites) was certified the winner of the presidential race in Florida. The state's 25 electoral votes will settle the contest for the White House.

Wells said the majority decision had ``no foundation in the law of Florida'' as it existed on Nov. 7, when the election was held, or indeed, until the Supreme Court ruled. He had sharply questioned the rival lawyers on that point when the case was argued before the court on Thursday.

I'm in total agreement Unk. Can't we all just get along? Enough with the slurs and name calling already.

I'm never far away... particularly when I'm needed by the steriod- saturated Unk.

Come now, Unk, America has always been a bickering mass of competing interests. Any decent read of American history will show a long, proud history of intercine squabbles. The current presidential debacle will not make any top ten list of "Constitutional crises."

The Florida Supreme Court decision is ill-founded and will be overturned. The Republic is a bit frayed about the edges, but we haven't come to letting judges decide elections.

As for your wished for war... don't worry, Unk. I think the Chinese will accommodate you within the next two decades. This turn of events may also resolve your lingering concern about social security.

Oh, the Club of Rome was wrong. Sorry, friend.

Ah Ken, always the optimist. LOL!

Ah, Unk, just a student of history. Remember, I spent most of 1999 trying to convince people "Little House on the Prairie" was not a documentary. The conservatives see our past with rose-colored glasses. The liberals see our past as a long serious of victimizations by those awful white males... damn them and their cursed Western Civilization! (laughter)

I will stop by and annoy both sides.

I cede you your point about the bickering of democracy, remember "Ruther'fraud' B. Hayes"?

Silly question, of course you do.

Now, as for you being an optimist, I think that the mutant ninjas from outer space would be a far more worrisome opponent than would the Chinese. Oh sure, the Chinese have nukes and forty-some billion soldiers in uniform, but the aliens have the technology to enhance the flavor of food without the use of MSG, which frankly scares the hell out of me.

Don't worry, be happy. God loves you and, more importantly, so do I.

Send money.
