Campaign Finance Reform? Not in NJ

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unk's Wild Wild West : One Thread

The Republicans are supposed to be the rich guys, right? Well, not in NJ where Corzine just spent the most ever in a Senate campaign. And not in MN where a Dayton's Dept store heir won a Senatorship. And not in Washington state where the Democrat woman who narrowly defeated Sen Gorton is a "dot com" millionaiare. And not in WI where Sen Herb Kohl may be the richest person in the Senate. And not in GA where Jane Fonda just ponied up a million dollars for algor's legal expenses. Etc, etc, etc.

I don't begrudge these people their money or how they spend it. But let's quit pretending that Repubs are all rich and Dems are all poor.

CORZINE REPORTS HE SPENT NEARLY $62 MILLION IN SENATE CAMPAIGN

Thursday, December 7, 2000 (12-07) 14:50 PST NEWARK, N.J. (AP) --

The final, record-shattering numbers are in: Former Wall Street banker Jon Corzine spent nearly $62 million to get elected to the Senate, according to a phone book-thick report released Thursday.

The figures were contained in a report to the Federal Election Commission.

The Democrat won on Nov. 7 with a shade over 50 percent of the vote to 47 percent for Republican Rep. Bob Franks.

Franks spent a total of $6.1 million on the race to succeed retiring Democrat Frank Lautenberg.

Corzine's spending amounts to more than twice the previous record for any Senate candidate. The old record was set by Republican Michael Huffington, who spent $30 million in a losing bid in California in 1994.

Corzine, who doled out his own money in huge checks to his campaign account, has a personal fortune estimated at $400 million.
