Calif. Apartment Building Collapses

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- A two-story apartment building collapsed Friday after a possible explosion.

Two or three people were reported trapped, and an urban rescue team was dispatched to the building northwest of downtown, said Fire Department spokesman Jim Wells.

The cause was uncertain, but witnesses reported hearing an explosion, Wells said.

The building -- a stucco structure in Echo Park, one of the city's older neighborhoods -- was badly damaged. Upper-floor units at the front of the building collapsed onto the ground floor.

Firefighters were planning how to enter the shattered structure safely, Wells said.
