Computer glitch trips CDNX

By RICHARD BLOOM Globe and Mail Update

For the second time in a little more than a week, computer problems delayed trading on the Canadian Venture Exchange.

The CDNX delayed its opening bell for 50 minutes Wednesday morning after a network glitch wouldn't allow all of the exchange's trading computers to connect properly, Donna Pincott, the CDNX's communications director told globeandmail.com.

That problem forced the exchange's officials to suspend trading and reboot the entire system to avoid any inequalities in access to trades.

The glitch was detected at 9:05 a.m. EST and was fixed by 10:20 a.m. Trading has been problem-free since the resumption of trading, the CDNX reported.

On Nov. 28, trading was suspended after a cable was cut in Sprint Canada's network which provides access to the exchange's trading system across the country. Sprint also provides the CDNX with a backup network, which also failed. Maintenance staff performing routine work in a rail yard near Chicago ruptured the cable.

Ms. Pincott said that the two incidents are in no way connected, explaining that "you just can't plan for the unexpected."
