Flaxseed

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Hi again...recently I read somewhere in this forum about flaxseed being good for I believe it was fibromyalgia. What I want to let people know is that flaxseed is much cheaper if you buy the seed and grind it up as needed. It has a REAL LONG shelf life (as whole seed) but must be used soon after grinding and is best fresh ground anyway. It MUST be ground up to get the omega-3 benefits. If ingested as seed it will just go right through your system with no benefit whatsoever. You can put it on your cereal or in your juice or whatever (I think a tbsp per) It's about $2.50 for a 450 gram bag...Ann

How do you know how much to take?

search the name "Dr. Johanna Budwig" in any search engine for information on the use of flaxseed. Many of the sites only give you bits and pieces of information, however if you do some extensive looking/research you will find the site that actually gives you her recipes or what to and not to eat.

Flaxseed is ground and mixed with yoghurt, cottage cheese, sprinkled on ice cream, baked in breads, mixed with rices and so on to get the 2 to 3 ounces required daily.

I am able to order a 50 pound of flaxseed for $18.00 from my local feed store that sells feed for livestock.

I hope this helps those that need this information.

Also for FMS- look at the research on 'Feverfew' the herb for its anti-inflammatory properties. (Medline is one of the best medical herbal research sites I have found)

Hi, I eat my flaxseeds un-ground, by placing a couple of teaspoons on my oatmeal. They will soften from the heat of the oatmeal, and I make sure I chew them well. I suppose you could ground them as you need them and place them in your food.
