Carnivore Review Still Doesn't Ease Privacy Concerns

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Grassroots Information Coordination Center (GICC) : One Thread

Carnivore, the proposed computer surveillance
system that scans email messages for hints of
criminal or terrorist activity, is coming under
fire from a review by information technology
specialists who are insisting the Federal Bureau
of Investigation make public the source code.

Civil rights groups have long complained about
the program because of the kind of data it
collects and because the potential for abuse it
enormous. And other experts like Federal
Communications Commission chief technologist
David Farber said that "it cannot support a
conclusion that Carnivore is correct, safe,
or always consistent with legal limitations."
And Matt Blaze of AT&T has found a glitch that
could enable the software to miss important
emails that might either implicate a person or
exonerate the from a crime.
