Humidifier Odor

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I got a great deal on an 8 gallon humidifier at a yard sale..It works great..I have scrubbed it out with bleach but it still has a musty odor..Can I put drops of scented oil in it or something? Cleaned the filter too, but this odor is getting old quick.

Lynn, try using some vinegar. I wouldn't think it would hurt to use the scented oils. Good luck!!

The vinegar's a good idea, but you may want to try a citrus based cleaner too.

We used baking soda and water to eliminate odor in ours.

When we used a humidifier years ago, after we had thoroughly cleaned it to start the season, we would add a capful of bleach every time we added water. This solved the problem.

The baking soda and vinegar didn't help..If I add the bleach am I going to be smelling bleach all the time? Don't think I can handle that...

Gee, I don't remember as it's been quite awhile ago. I would think if there was a strong smell I surely would have noticed it and remembered that. Maybe do it once and see how it is. You might only have to adjust the doseage down a bit and it would probably still work. Only you could tell for sure.
