JAMES CITY - The county's 911 system was off line for five hours Sunday night and Monday morning after two fuses blew in a console that's part of the 911 system.
The mishap happened about 10:50 p.m. Sunday, according to James City Fire Chief Tal Luton.
Luton said Verizon was able to re-route the county's 911 calls to the York County's 911 center by 12:30 a.m.
The chief said that using the York County 911 center as a back up allowed York County operators to input information from emergency calls on a computer screen that James City dispatchers could access.
Luton said that television stations agreed to broadcast notices with an alternate emergency number for residents to call.
He added that two 911 calls were received by the 911 system before emergency calls were being rerouted to York County. He said that emergency workers were able to contact the callers who placed those calls because they were able to print the callers names, addresses and phone numbers on a printer in the county's dispatch center.
