UNION-TRIBUNE November 25, 2000An American Airlines flight headed for Chicago yesterday morning returned to Lindbergh Field after takeoff because there was smoke in the cockpit.
There was no fire, but the Federal Aviation Administration was investigating the cause of the smoke, said Jerry Johnston, an FAA regional operations officer.
Last night, repair crews were working on the airplane, he said.
An American Airlines reservation clerk said Flight 1850 had been canceled, but it was unclear how passengers were rerouted.
