TORONTO - Drivers in Toronto may be in for a tough time Monday. Independent truckers say they may block major highways to protest against the ever rising cost of fuel.

About 250 owner-operators met with federal and provincial politicians on Sunday, and they concluded no one's doing much to help them. The president of the National Truckers Association, Bill Wellman, said the three-hour meeting allowed the federal politicians to make their campaign pitches – and they didn't include relief for truckers.

And the truckers are angry with provincial politicians, too. They say they haven't been able to reach a deal with the province to require shippers to pay a fuel surcharge.

Some manufacturers pay, but not all of them.

The truckers say they had been promised a deal by Nov. 1. The provincial government said Sunday it would continue to work toward a resolution.

Fuel prices took a jump of three cents a litre last week, and are expected to rise again this week.
