ST. LOUIS (AP) -- A Trans World Airlines plane bound for Sacramento, Calif., returned to St. Louis and landed safely Monday after the pilot reported smoke in the cockpit.

TWA Flight 253 landed without incident. Airline spokesman Mark Abels said the 135 passengers were put on another plane.

Abels said he didn't have any details about the incident, which happened aboard an MD-80 jet. Fire and rescue trucks responded, but Abels said no emergency was declared.
