The Symbolism of "The mask... are 2 things the ebony clock symbolizes the time they have left to live because Poe in the story counts down by min or seconds and also everytime the clock strikes it is a reality check on what is going on around themm outside of the abbey.

There is a lot of symbolization in "The Masque of the Red Death". First there is the rooms. They represent the different times of life...from the east the beginning of time and happiness (light colors) to the end death and darkness (dark colors). I agree that the sybolism of the clock is that it brings the people back to the reality of life because it reminds them of the death and darkness of the real world. Then there is the glowing embers that represent actual life as in when the last flame dies out so does the last person. Also, the color windows the flames glow through represent the different shades of life.
