Nuclear Sub Near Meltdown
A British submarine that carried a nuclear reactor came close to a meltdown last May when the ship's cooling system had a problem. "The Sunday Times" reported that the problem on the HMC Tireless could have caused contamination of thousands of square miles of the Mediterranean. Initially, officials called the problems "minor," but a source associated with repairs on the submarine said that on-board safety systems, which helped crew members shut down the reactor, helped stop any major problems. Protests from local residents in Gibralter prevented repair work on the sub until recently.
