Are there any composting toilets that are a decent price? Which brand is the best?

We have plans for making one that utilizes a pit in a basement or tall crawlspace made out of block. They were obtained from Long Branch Environmental center.I can look up the information for you, if you like.

we have also looked at the Sunmar units esp. for two toilet hook up with remote bin.

We currently have a self contained unit that I picked up at a bargain barn for $75,but it is not one I would get again, unless I could find it that cheap, bc of cleanout.I would rather have the cleanout in a basement or crawlspace, not your living space. Also it requires a heater to work well, and so there goes your electric bill.It is Ok for occasional use but not up to my expectations for continual use. Have a good imperviuos floor if you go with self contained, not wood like me,cause you WILL have a spill, during cleanout.

There is a good website with plans for building one, which we plan to use. Do a search for composting toilets and you should come up with it.

I bought one years ago, $600 at the time but it was really a problem child. Generally you need heat in them, the oen I had, had an electric heating element, ( you don't want electric) you can get them in 12 volt too. Keeping the the moisture + temp. balanced was an ongoing problem for me. I prefer an outhose myself. In the wonter you can keep the toilet seat behind the wood stove and carry it out with you.
