THURSDAY NOVEMBER 16 2000 Russia to crash Mir into Pacific Russia will crash the 14-year-old Mir space station into the Pacific Ocean in February, officials decided today.

The decision to abandon the space station was taken at a meeting of the Russian Cabinet.

Officials have wrestled for months over what to do with the Mir, which Moscow can no longer afford to maintain.

The Cabinet approved the plan to plunge the space station into a remote part of the Pacific, somewhere east of Australia.
