was going to clean the ashes for leaching lye for a batch of soap. Was looking for a screen or something to use to get the charcoal and chucks out,,Found a large oinion bag,, filled it with the ashes, shook it a few times, TAH DAH. Even figuered it would make a good ash shaker during growing season, to keep the bugs off certain plants, next time Ill put a bucket under it, and catch the ashes

Stan, What plants benifit from wood ash dusting? I'm always looking for different things to use. The other day at the library, I found a recipe for plant food that uses whiskey, soap and ash to make 20 gallons of fertilizer ( the recipe only uses 2 oz of whiskey for the mix).

Sounds about right -- 2 oz for the mix, the rest for the mixer.

wood ash adds potash to the soil,, and the ash itself, dusted onto the plants helps keep some bugs off,, of course it has to be reapplied after rain
