Natural-gas prices hit high; heating oil also climbs
Seattle Times news services NEW YORK - The cost of natural gas soared to a record, and heating oil also gained, as a band of cold weather moved across the north-central U.S. toward the East Coast and boosted demand for heating fuel.
The cold front ushered in the season's first prolonged spell of wintry weather and rekindled concern that low inventories may send fuel prices even higher this winter.
Natural-gas prices already have risen 30 percent since late last month on expectations for plunging temperatures. Heating oil is up 49 percent this year.
