Sydney - Fraudsters using a cancelled debit card managed to milk automatic teller machines (ATMs) of millions of dollars in the biggest bank heist of its kind in Australian history, a court in Adelaide was told on Friday.

Four family members were charged with conspiracy to steal after police recovered Aus$4.8 million (US$2.5 million) in cash and property from a suburban home.

Those charged are believed to have used a debit card stolen from a Hong Kong resident studying in Queensland to make 6 800 withdrawals from Adelaide ATMs over a three-month period.

Detective Superintendent Peter Simons was unable to explain how a cancelled card could be used to steal Aus$6.4 million and how the withdrawals could continue for three months before the thieves were caught.

"They are some of the questions that I really can't answer at this stage. Hopefully, as the investigation progresses, we'll know exactly why this took place, but I can't answer that question specifically," Simons said. - Sapa-DPA

One canceled card; one Hong-kong resident with a heavy checking account!

Thanks Martin for all your labor
