SEEKONK -- More than 90 percent of the town was in darkness last night, after a one-car accident on Arcade Avenue knocked out power to most houses and businesses, the police said.

A car that slammed into a utility pole at about 6 p.m. cut power to much of the town for about two hours, according to the police. In an unrelated incident, a pair of transformers shut down, contributing to the failure.

No one was injured in the car accident, near Seekonk High School, the police said. But rescue crews had to wait about 20 minutes for Massachusetts Electric workers to shut off power before approaching the car, which was exposed to live wires.
