darkroom borders

I've been doing black and white darkroom work. I saw alot of pictures by professionals which have a kind of rugged black border. I've heard you can file a negative carrier, but before I vandalize any property, I'd like to know it's going to work...

Yes, it will work. you might try and pick up a used carrier and file it down. that way, you have other options. Another method is to make a carrier out of matt board and don't try to make perfectly straight edges. We have done that several times with students. Calumet makes an easel(but expensive) that will give even black edges. Also, check out Barlett's book on Black and White printing. He gives some instruction on how to put a black or white edge around a print. We have also taken very thin drafting tape and placed edges around a finished print.
