Sprint Accidentally Sends Out Disconnect Notices to 20,000 The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Sprint accidentally sent disconnect notices to about 20,000 local telephone customers in six states after a computer glitch doubled their bills, a spokesman said Friday. Sprint spokesman Bill Van Kirk said none of those customers were disconnected.

The glitch charged them twice for service, causing the automated system to send out disconnect notices on Oct. 29. The company discovered the problem early Monday when it began receiving calls, Van Kirk said.

Sprint did not send out letters explaining what had happened, but customer service representatives were available to tell them if they received a disconnect notice in error, he said.

The company has 8 million local phone service customers in 18 states, Van Kirk said. The states affected were Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, New Jersey, Kansas and Minnesota.
