Population: LA vs SF

greenspun.com : LUSENET : San Francisco History : One Thread

Can you help settle a disagreement with my friend? He says that Los Angeles has always been a bigger city than San Francisco. And while I agree that this is true now, I say it has not always been so.

When did Los Angeles overtake San Francisco in population?

Thank you! Tom Miner

In the 1900 Census, SF was larger with 342,782 and LA with 170,298.

By the time of the 1910 Census, LA had 504,131 and SF 416,912.

At some point between 1900 and 1910, LA overtook with a greater population.
