Buddha Says

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TB2K spinoff uncensored : One Thread

"DO not believe in anything simply because you heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it"

Buddha

I find this appropriate for the "season".

Answers

I "DO not believe..." in Buddha. I find that even MORE appropriate for ANY season.

You dont BELIEVE in Buddha ???

It's pretty much documented as fact that a person (now referred to as Buddha) once lived on this planet. Are you saying that you disbelieve his having ever existed ?

If you're saying (and Im striving for understanding here, because nothing in your post directly suggests this), that you disbelieve the idea of his divinity, then thats fine, cuz he's not a prophet, God or anything similar. He never claimed to be anything other than just a regular guy.

Or maybe you mean that you disbelieve his philosophy. In which case you expressed yourself poorly.

In either case, you should possibly try thinking more before you post, rather than hanging out your knee-jerk responses to dry in public.

Regards

I spoke to a close friend of Buddha last week and the friend revealed that Buddha was involved in a money laundering operation for a Colombian drug cartel 12 years ago. "I didn't touch the stuff, I just handled the money," Buddha reportedly said. He then warned, "Don't tell anyone about this or you'll be sorry, pal."

I asked what he meant by that statement, and he got the most chilling, evil, demonic look in his eye that I had ever seen come from a human being, much less a prophet trying to attain Nirvana, and he said, 'World War III.

Check Drudge, NewsMax, and WorldNetDaily for the breaking story.

Buddah say "those who go to bed with itchy butt, wake up with smelly fingers".

I 'believe'.

I believe:

Just a little tongue in cheek in response to the anonymous poster who was playing a word game in the e-mail address concerning my handle.

I previously explained the sense in which I am a "christian"-If you did not catch that, "christ" is the essence, the pure being of God, a word used to describe that which is truly indescribable. To experience God is to be unable to put it into words. It is not a contradiction in my belief system to say all will be reunited with God-that is what all souls are up to at their own pace-journeying back to that whence they came.

I know you do not agree with this, as you have posted numerous rebuttals to al-d's similar contentions. The beauty of being is that the OUTCOME IS ASSURED. When you understand that Hitler will go to heaven, then you will understand my theology.

I suspect that will never happen, and that is fine; I was baptized by water and the holy spirit, and therefore can claim to be a christian- as it was explained to me, once I accepted christ through the holy spirit my outcome was assured. I have grown since then to realize that eternal damnation is mutually exclusive to a GOd who loves unconditionally-I choose to have that kind of GOd today.

Has anyone heard of the statue in Vietnam somewhere of Jesus and Buddha with their arms around each other? They were very close in their philosophies. If anyone knows where there's a picture of that statue, I'd like to see it. I've only read about it.

-- Anita (Anita_S3@hotmail.com), November 03, 2000.

>> Has anyone heard of the statue in Vietnam somewhere of Jesus and Buddha with their arms around each other? <<

I hate to let my cynicism show, Anita, but here it is, full blast:

I would stake a bet at heavy odds that this statue was conceived and commissioned by a Christian. I'm not saying I am right, only that my gut tells me I am right. Vietnam is a Buddhist country. Christianity was the religion of the French, who colonized Vietnam. Under those circumstances my gut tells me that Christians hd a lot more to gain by association with Buddha than Buddhists could gain by association with Christ.

As for their similarity - Jesus, as reported by the gospels, believed in a loving, but patriarchal, God who numbered the hairs on your head. Buddha spoke of redemption without speaking of God.

-- Brian McLaughlin (brianm@ims.com), November 03, 2000.

As for their similarity - they spoke of and lived love. Or so I believe. The rest is immaterial, IMO.

-- Bingo1 (howe9@shentel.net), November 03, 2000.

"a loving, but patriarchal God". Sounds as dreary as a loving but matriarchal state.
