A fire started in the ventilation system of Salem's Yokohama Tire Corp. plant Wednesday night. No one was injured, and production never stopped at the plant on Indiana Street, according to Salem Fire Department Lt. David Kaylor.
About 6:10 p.m., a piece of mechanical equipment sparked the smoldering fire, which moved into the ventilation system, Kaylor said. There was minimal damage and the building was not evacuated, Kaylor said.
Roanoke County fire crews were called in to help fight the fire, which was under control in about 45 minutes, Kaylor said.
Crews stayed at the plant until about 9 p.m. to make sure the fire was out, Kaylor said.
