Freighter aground on Barrier Reef

A fully laden Malaysian container ship has run aground on the Great Barrier Reef off far-north Queensland.

There is no report of pollution at this stage.

The Bunga Terati Satu was on its way from Singapore to Sydney when it hit Sudbury Reef, about 22 nautical miles east of Cairns, at 7.30am AEST this morning.

The Australian Maritime Rescue Authority says it is unclear at this stage whether the hull of the boat has been damaged.

He says there are no reports of pollution at this stage, but says the boat is carrying more than 1,200 tonnes of fuel.

Authorities believe the ship is carrying some dangerous cargo, but they will not reveal what it is at this stage.

There will be a media conference in Brisbane this afternoon.

Attempts will be made to refloat the ship on the 4:00pm high tide.
