How many of you gals shave your legs?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

The adornment post got me to thinking. How many of you shave your legs, and armpits? Have you always or recently stopped, and why? I've always shaved but would like to stop, just a lot of trouble if you ask me, one more thing society makes us feel we need to do. I wear pretty long dresses and skirts anyway, except in summer I do wear shorts, so I'm not sure how I would handle that. I'm in Tx so summer last a long time. I've been not shaving regular in winter last couple of years, but dh would rather me shave. How long does it take to get soft instead of stubbly. Do Amish or Mennonite women shave? Who started this tradition anyway? Dh says he'd rather not sleep next to a hairy legged woman? LOL I would think after it grows out a LOT it would be soft like the hair on the upper part of my leg which I rarely shave, usually only shave from the knee down and it's dark, coarse hair, above my knee if fine light, nearly blond hair. O.K. ladies let's hear from you. No I'm not interested to know if any of you guys shave your legs! LOL

Carol, You know that shaving legs and armpits is an American thing and most women in other countries do not do it. I don't shave my legs but don't have dark hair on my legs. I bet you do not get many replies on this as I noticed it was hard to say that I do shave my armpits as I can not get out of the habit! I have had many friends who don't shave and feel just fine about it.

-- karen (kansasgoats@iwon.com), October 31, 2000.

Hi Carol - my answer is yes and no. Sometimes I do, and sometimes I don't. I prefer the appearance of shaved legs, but don't care all that much. I do shave my legs more in the summer, since I wear shorts a lot then. I don't shave my armpits very often either, but that is mostly because the hair has gotten really sparse. For both, it undoubtedly "helps" me that my hair is fairly fine and light in color. Once, on a whim, I shaved my forearms (the hair is virtually invisible, so it was really a ridiculous notion). I really did NOT like the stubble growing back in and never tried that again.

I'm not married, so I don't have to contend with a husband's opinion. MY opinion, however, is that any man that wants his wife to shave her legs/pits should be willing to do the same. And maintain it. Nearly every guy I've seen has a LOT coarser and more hair on their legs than most women. So why should a woman want to put up with that in bed?

-- Joy Froelich (dragnfly@chorus.net), October 31, 2000.

I must confess that I don't shave my legs unless I have to and I shave my arms more regularly. I wear mainly long dresses and I never wear shorts. I absolutely love long dresses and one of the reasons is that they cover my legs so nicely. I honestly think that shaving is an unecessary act. My hubby likes me just the way I am. It's nice to see some other ladies on the board wearing long dresses too. For me they are absolutely the most comfortable clothing. In winter I love that I can layer a pair of knit pants underneath and wear a thick skirt over the top and be really warm.

I just don't wear shorts. I just can't work around here in them. My legs and knees get so beat up and scratched trying to build something or garden. And it drives me nuts when flys land on my legs. And the puppies will SCRATCH my legs so bad. In the summer, I shave the bottom of my legs and armpits, I put on shorts after my shower at night. But I don't like shaving. I don't in the winter. I wear long dresses with leggings underneath to church or good jeans. My boots or knee high mockasins will cover my lower legs.

And I don't wear sleeveless shirts, I like T's better. I have dark skin, but I don't like the tops of my shoulders to get sunburnt in the summer. I only shave my armpits when Steve says I need to!! No one can see the hair if I don't shave, and it does get soft.

Can't, my skin's too sensitive.

Arm pits always ,legs always in the summer hardly in the winter .I must admit I HATE body hair and wish Hubby would shave .

-- Patty (fodfarms@slic.com), October 31, 2000.

Yes to both! Just couldnt stand not to, even tho I have fine & light hair. Probably could go much longer between shaves, but do it daily anyway. Wow, never thought I was so much in the minority!LOL! As to the suggestion about men shaving, no thanks! I even like the stubble my husband gets if he goes a day without shaving his face. And hairy chests and legs on men are great, can't really imagine them all smooth and soft...hmm, maybe it's just me!?!? Interesting question Carol! God Bless! Wendy

-- Wendy@GraceAcres (wjl7@hotmail.com), October 31, 2000.

I'll go you girls one better, I shave "down there" (must be careful, a male may wander on this thread), underarms always, legs in the summer and sporaticly (sp) in winter. My mother told me that hair holds bacteria etc... so it is better to shave. Don't want to go too far into this. My body hair is corse, my husband has really soft body hair, if I had his hair I would not shave anything. I don't even know what my underarm hair looks like grown out!

-- Tina (clia88@newmexico.com), October 31, 2000.

I have found that I don't need to use as much antipersperant if I don't shave. I don't wear sleeveless shirts so it's not a problem. If I will be wearing shorts, which I do in summer, I shave my legs. I seldom shave them in winter because I, too, wear long skirts and pants all the time. Faye.

-- Faye (rcart@millry.net), October 31, 2000.

I shave legs, armpits, and bikini line. Unless, of course, it's summer. Then I wax sometimes. I am fairly light haired (naturally this time)but I am in our hot tub every night and see myself daily in swimwear (or the altogether, depending on if it's just us) and I prefer how shaved skin looks.

In college, I didn't shave at all and it didn't bother me. Now I just prefer doing it and it's just another routine in the shower.

My husband shaves daily, sometimes twice a day. If we decide to, oh, how do you Americans say, well, you know...in the afternoon, he will take a time out to shave prior to our "engagement". Very thoughtful so my face doesn't end up like hamburger.

Enough said (probably too much.)

-- sheepish (rborgo@gte.net), October 31, 2000.

I am a gorilla. I wax my upper legs and bikini line as they are the worst. If I'm not in too much pain, I'll continue with the rest of my legs. (I waxed under my arms once. Once) If not, I'll shave after the shower at night. Shave less in the winter. When I used to take riding lessons and jump, I shaved before the lesson in case I broke my leg. Vain or what? I used to bleach my mustache but it still left a shadow so now I wax that too. My arms are hairy but I'm not doing anything about that. As long as my back doesn't start growing hair!

Call me an old prude--I feel like that is a personal question I would not ask anyone else let alone on a family forum! Sonda in Ks.

-- Sonda (sgbruce@birch.net), October 31, 2000.

I shave underarms everytime I'm in the shower. Contrary to above post - I get by with less deodorant if I DO shave. I shave lower legs only - whenever the whim hits. I've gone as much as a year (or more?) without shaving legs and it does NOT get like the hair on my thighs or arms. It's less scratchy than after shaving, but just as dark and coarse as before.

I often shave MORE in the winter when I wear socks than in the summer when I wear sandals. My legs itch like crazy from the socks pulling on the hairs if I haven't shaved. For me it's a comfort thing - not an appearance thing.

P.S. I prefer hair on guys too - not woolly mamoth, but not baby soft either.

-- Deborah (ActuaryMom@hotmail.com), October 31, 2000.

O.K. the body hair thing is probally about bacteria or something .I cannot even scratch my Husbands back in fear of getting skin cells under my nails .But I can deliver babies without gloves ? Go figure ! I especially hate hair stuck in my teeth or throat .Alright my family was right I'M nuts .

-- Patty (fodfarms@slic.com), October 31, 2000.

Underarms often, legs when I have the time, which is RARELY. I've found that since I wear long skirts, the hair has gradually practically stopped growing back above the hemline.

-- Christina W. (introibo@address.com), October 31, 2000.

Nope, don't shave. I do wear shorts in the summer, don't wear sleeveless shirts. The only time I will shave is if we will be going swimming in the company of other people. If I can get away with it, I wear a T shirt instead, because I feel rather exposed and naked in a swimsuit. When I do shave, it makes my skin feel so raw and tender! How can you gals stand this everyday? I do however, shave all our milking does every summer. Udders, bodies, heads, even!

Have my eyebrows waxed by the gal who cuts my hair, shave my arm pits all the time (mostly because we vacationed in Canada yearly fishing as kids, and used to tease the girls about not shaving their pits, now I have a complex about it :) Husband shaves my bikini line for me, always has :) and I use Nads on my legs. It is great and has just about left me hairless. It really does work great, very little pain, well for women, my son let my daugher do his neck and he about decked her! And no stubble when it grows back. A great product that is chemical free. Pretty sure it is just nads.com or something really similar. I also wish husband would let me nads his back! Vicki

I shave legs and armpits in summer, but not in winter. Nobody sees them in winter so why bother. Besides I hate shaving.

-- debra in ks (solid-dkn@msn.com), October 31, 2000.

Daily. As in: Every day. Without fail. Couldn't stand it otherwise. Pits, legs, bikini line. And I wear mostly long dresses and jeans, shorts in summer tho.

-- Polly (tigger@moultrie.com), October 31, 2000.

Hey guys, thank you so much for all these delightful little confessions! Best laugh I've had all day! If I don't shave my underarms they smell. Period. If I don't shave my thin blonde haired legs, they look gross. Period. Covering them with a skirt or pants doesn't help, because my brain still knows that hair is there. When I wear shorts I can feel the wind whipping past the little hairs. I feel as unfeminine as my full bearded husband! His coarse grey beard looks very handsome on him, but if I had it I would certainly freak out big time! Putting socks (especially woollen ones) on hairy legs really feels itchy & irritating...so why do it? Does not take long to shave or wax. Both reduce hair after faithful use. If you are European you won't feel this way, but most American women feel better without all the hair. Hope you all have time & energy for a shower, a shave & maybe even a little fun tonight after work! Lol!

-- Jane Gauch (itzsewbear@altavista.com), October 31, 2000.

It's too bad people can't just do what they want without being scrutinized or may be they just think they are being scrutinized. I think alot more people would quit shaving if it became popular to be hairy. To a certain extent I like to do waht pleases my husband so I mostly shave although I am real lazy about it and don't bother half the time. Also he's not real uptight about it. When you have two small children bugging you through the entire shower it's hard to rationalize time for shaving. I'm sure it would take less time if I kept up with it.

-- Evelyn B (peontoo@yahoo.com), October 31, 2000.

No way. No purpose to it cuz no ones sees my legs anyway. And if I shave them they are so scratchy that they wake me up at night unless I wear long pajamas!

-- earthchild (earthchild8@hotmail.com), October 31, 2000.

90% of my husband's side of the family is Amish, yes, they and the Mennonite women do shave their legs and arm pits, but not all of them do. I'm not sure what their Elders official position is on the matter though, but they are not going to be looking there to check, are they? I think they just do it and keep it to themselves. I shave my armpits regularly, and legs when my husband complains about it, it's funny, sometimes I haven't shaved my legs for months, and he says nothing, and then sometimes he notices right away, go figure! It's such a simple thing to do, so I try to be nice about it. :-) Annie in SE OH.

-- Annie Miller (annie@1st.net), October 31, 2000.

Don't shave anything. Haven't for years. My partner is a natural kind of guy, which is nice for me. I have found that my hair is soft and fine and nothing like what would grow on a man, so it seems like just another mark of femininity to me. And adulthood, being an adult woman. Sometimes I wonder where this hairlessness fetish came from. Children don't have that kind of hair. I wonder if it started out as some kind of pedophilia. The question has crossed my mind more than once, and that's the only answer I can come up with. I would be relieved to find out that this custom has an entirely different origin.

In deference to American culture, when I am at the office (law office, 5 days a week) I wear opaque black or navy blue tights. Otherwise, I wear swimsuits, shorts and sleeveless shirts as I feel the urge to do so.

An amusing anecdote: Once I was on the bus and two average-looking German girls got on. Their sleeveless tops revealed that they were not practitioners of the American razor culture. However, there were several young men on the bus to whom that was no deterrent at all. Maybe they thought it was sexy and exotic, I don't know. I wonder what their reactions would have been if the girls had not had that accent!

-- Laura Jensen (lrjensen@nwlink.com), November 01, 2000.

I traded in my razor for clippers when I was 15 and my friends were quite the international mix. The girls told me that shaving made the boys uncomfortable because where they came from, only hookers shaved, not "nice girls."

Several years later, I had the opportunity to ask a couple of European hookers about the shaving thing. I quote, "If men wanted women, they would be with their wives or their girlfriends. When they want little girls, little boys or anything else, they come see us." That sure made me take a close look at the things we do to be "socially acceptible."

Of course, the world is becoming americanized and the last I heard, to be socially acceptible in Europe, a girl HAS to epilate everything.

I am glad to know I am not the only blonde monkey in America.

-- Laura (gsend@hotmail.com), November 01, 2000.

I don't think "Dr. Mike, Medicine Woman" shaved at all. All you can see of her is her lower arms and face. And Ike uses that HUGE razor to shave the men! At some point in time since settlers comming here, the dresses got shorter. Maybe the roaring 50's??

-- Cindy in Ky (solidrockranch@msn.com), November 01, 2000.

I never thought of it as such an American thing. After all, there have always been cultures that eschewed body hair(most notably ancient Egypt).Honestly,it's a personal thing with me:I like feeling silky. Blessings,~Tracy~

-- Tracy Jo Neff (tntneff@ifriendly.com), November 01, 2000.

Hey Laura! I had come to the conclusion that the shaving thing is linked to looking like little girls a while ago as well. I stopped shaving this year and the only problem I find is that leg hairs get iritated when I wear socks:) but that's going away as weather requires socks everyday now. In the summer I wear broomstick skirts of very thin material so I am as cool as wearing shorts, have more freedom in where my legs can go and nobody sees the hair. What motivated me was a young woman in my bellydance class who obviously didn't shave armpits, but got lots of jobs dancing. That and some back to nature books I was reading gave me the courage to let go.

-- Epona (staceyb@myway.com), November 01, 2000.

I shave my legs in the summer so I can feel comfortable wearing a swimming suit, but not in the winter. My skin gets too dry as it is without shaving on top of it -- I'd be digging at my legs all night, and my husband hates that! Underarms are always shaved. I finally started shaving my handicapped daughter's underarms (never shave her legs) and it has definitely reduced the BO problem. I wear longish skirts when I wear dresses, if it's cold in the winter have been known to wear long johns or stretch pants under them (the only use I have for stretch pants, by the way!), and wear opaque black tights. I don't know where the custom of shaving came from, and don't think the origins really matter. As long as it seems to be the cultural norm right now, we are kind of stuck with either shaving, disguising the fact that we aren't shaving, or brazening it out. I'm not too good at the latter, so do one of the first two options. By the way, hubby told me years ago that he didn't care if I shaved my legs or not, but he really wanted me to shave my underarms. I guess underarm hair on women kind of grossed him out!

WEll I got a lot more responses than ever expected. I ask my mother- in-law who is 74 when this started and she sd she allways did it as a girl and so did the other. I think it may have started with hose.

I am an expat merican - living in europe - I don't shave my legs, but I did shave my pits this summer when I was visiting the States. i am not hairy at all so I don't really need to. But if I had gorilla legs I probably would. By the way , I don't find this topic too personal! It is just another part of our lives.

-- kelly (kellytree@hotmail.com), November 02, 2000.

This is a "life question" as my daughters put it. I like the product "Nair" though I rarely have even the 4 minutes it takes for the stuff to work. I am working on that. I shave my armpits (or use Nair) all the time. It is not necessary to do it every day, usually, just once a week. I have baby fine light hair except on my pits, which is brown. I feel more sweaty if I don't shave. As to my legs, I rarely shave my thighs as the hair is so fine and blonde it doesn't show up, the lower part I shave before a doctors appointment and when it starts pulling on my jeans. I have very dry skin (the nair helps this, which is why I love the product, very moisturizing) and to shave in the winter is usually painful. It grows very slow so doesn't make much difference. I have complained that I needed to "Mow" my legs and my girls were shocked since they didn't see any hair. :-) But when the light hits it just right....it seems to me to all show up. My hubby doesn't care whether or not I shave my legs, and my underarms so rarely get overgrown he has never had the opportunity to make comments on that. :-)So I don't know his feelings on my pits. I also get irritation if I let the hair get too long on my pits so it is a comfort thing more for me then vanity. Unless I am going to the doctor. My rhuematologist has to feel my bones etc..and I prefer he feel silky legs then hairy ones. I feel prettier when I am silky smooth anyway. (another thing Nair does so well)

-- Cindy in OK (cynthiacluck@yahoo.com), November 02, 2000.

I shave both underarms & legs several times per week. I am one of those "hairy" ladies. :-( I also use nair on my upper lip. The hair there is very thin, but is brown and is noticable and makes me feel uncomfortable. I noticed someone metioned Nads. I have seen the infomercials and was wondering if that stuff works as well as they claim? The nair is so stinky and full of nasy chemical. Sometimes is burns my skin, but I have a friend who had a serious burn from hot wax so I don't feel comfortable with that at all.

-- elle (hotging@aol.com), November 02, 2000.

Elle,Try wax strips-I think they are Sally Hansen brand(or something like that). They are easy to apply, easy to pull off quickly,do not get your hands miserably sticky, and do not need heated-just warmed up in your palms.

~~Tracy~~

-- Tracy Jo Neff (tntneff@ifriendly.com), November 03, 2000.

Going to do an informertial for Nads here since I got lots of questions. I love the stuff, but if you have oily skin like one of my daughters, no amount of prewashing away the oil is going to make this stuff work. You have no heating with it, you simply spread on a very thin layer, very thin, apply the cloth strip, which are nothing more than broadcloth, stroke it with your hand 3 times to heat it up and than holding the other side down as not to pull your skin to much rip the sucker off. It is not as painful as waxing, doesn't leave me with welts like waxing my eyebrows left me, but it still hurts some, I just detest plucking, and no I do not have the courage to use it on my underarms, my oldest daughter uses it everywhere and loves it. You don't even have to reapply more goop, you simply move the strip to another place, stroke 3 times and rip, only when the strip is completly covered in hair do you reapply more goop. It washes off with water, is not sticky like wax and if you drip it on anything it doesn't stain or ruin it, and you can eat it! And yes it comes with a video and she does taste it, and when we all sat down to try it the first time, yes we all tasted it also! :) Biggest thing is that since I have been using it on my legs, I hardly have any hair left, well I wasn't the hairest thing to begin with anyway, but it is a noticable difference. Vicki

-- Vicki McGaugh TX (vickilonesomedoe@hotmail.com), November 03, 2000.

Vicki, does it taste better plain or hair-enhanced? LOL.

-- sheepish (rborgo@gte.net), November 03, 2000.

Shave the legs only when I hafta, armpits, maybe once a week. Since I wear long dresses & jumpers (mid-calf) I found I can save $$ by not shaving so often.

-- Phyllis (almostafarm@yahoo.com), November 03, 2000.

Food for thought: Years ago in my twenties I started developing breast lumps (non-cancerous)sometimes having to have surgery as often as three times a Year to have them removed. When I moved to the farm a freind sent me an article that someone was trying to link the use of shaving creams and deodarants in the underarm area to the growth of these tumors. So I eliminated shaving under the arms regularly (still do it occasionally) and wear deodorant only when I go to town etc and remove immediately when I return home. If I'm working in the garden or outside I simply wash more often. I have been tumor free for 5 years now? Go figure!! Don't know if that was the trick or not but I'm gonna abstain from shaving and deodorant as long as it keeps me out from under the knife. Besides showers are much cheaper.

RE: NADS. I've never tried it, but there is an interesting thread on the Gardenweb forum under That Homeplace, go to Beauty and Fashion. It seems sugaring is the same thing as NADS and there are several threads referring to the recipe. Everyone seems happy with the results and estatic about the price. As for me, I only shave when I have to...summer shorts or intimate moments.

Dear Carol,

For some reason I just had to comment on this subject. I'll try not to be coarse in doing so. Well - it's a pain, but I got into the shaving routine in teenage years - back when it was the grownup thing to do. Now, at 54, I doubt it would be noticed one way or the other if I didn't, but it's a trap now I would dearly like to drop. I only shave lower legs and armpits about once a week. That's when I soak in a tub rather than shower. Actually, I'm sort of remiss about the bathing thing, so you might not want to set any store in how I upkeep myself (heh, heh). I, too, wear long dresses and skirts for the most part, slacks once in a while - so no one sees anyway. My husband doesn't seem to notice. My arms are too fat to wear sleeveless stuff, so I guess this past summer is going to be it for me on that style, too. Excess facial hair is a problem that I alternate from plucking to hot wax to a Nads type product that I got cheaper at the drug store. I think it's like one girl said, it's more of a mental thing that I know it's there when I don't shave. If I could overcome that I would just be done with that little problem. For some reason, this has been an interesting topic! Wanda

-- Wanda King (wanda7@edge.net), November 06, 2000.

Do not shave anything. In my younger days working at a full-service car wash in shorts and halter top, I got many comments on the 'sexinesss' of hairy armpits. No one seemed to notice the legs. the only comment I've had on them has been appreciation of no scratching.

I think it started when silk stockings were 'in'. Shave, slather oil on - gives the appearance of silk stockings.

I always figured God knew what he was doing.

I have a niece who uses shaving powder for black men [she isn't]

I am a guy but I have to answer this question anyway. I could care less if you shave or not but the fact is that as a woman you look better to American men clean shaven. If you do not care what the majority of men think then do not shave. I would like to grow a beard. My wife hates me with a beard SO I SHAVE. If you and your mate are happy with your hairy ass keep it hairy. If you want to shave it do so. This is America you may keep your body as you please.

Skimming these responses, I noticed that, while many respondents voice curiosity about the origins of women's shaving, nobody seemed to know when or why women began to shave. I'm a white middle-class woman in my mid-forties, and in the culture I grew up in shaving legs and underarms has always been something that women just do. It's never seemed optional, as with men's face-shaving. So I poked around and came across this excerpt from an essay by Peter Davidson, in which he discusses how women began to shave: "As the story goes, an executive with the Wilkinson Sword company noticed a new fashion style in the May 1915 edition of Harper's Bazaar magazine. The model was wearing a new evening gown that featured exposed shoulders as well as some under arm hair. He calculated that the sales of razor blades would double if the company could convince women to shave. In two years women's hair shaving had become fashionable based on the advertising pitch that body hair was unattractive and unfeminine."

We shave because somebody wanted to sell razors. Who knew?
