430ez Flash Useing Project -A- Flash

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

Would have made better title but ran out of room.

I just got the project a Flash have read as much as i can and eyeballs about ready to fall out..

Is there a way to force the 430ez into Std TTL mode Instead of A-ttl The Paper work that came With the project a flash says not to use camera in program Mode which uses A-ttl ..

I played With my EOS 1 for quite a bit and only way i can get TTL is in Manual mode on Camera Any other Way to force TTL so I can shoot in AV or TV mode and not try to fool with flash all the time ...

Thx Robert

Interesting thoughts here. I was under the belief that changing to Av or Tv would force a change to straight TTL, but I just tried it with my 420EZ and Elan. You're right it stays in A-TTL. But... The 540EZ does not! In fact tilting the head up disables A-TTL as well on the 540EZ but not the 420EZ. I never knew they opperated differently. (I assume the 430 & 420 opperate the same.

Anyway, to your question. Yes there is a way other than using manual mode. You can use Canon's HSA-2. It's normally used as the device that you attach Canon's modular off camera TTL cords to, but since it has a hotshoe on top of it, you can just use it alone between your 430EZ and the top of your camera. It'll dissable A-TTL, raise the flash about an inch and set you back about $60 plus shipping from B&H.

By the way, as I understand it, A-TTL's only real advantage is to determine Canon's best guess at an f:stop to ballance flash and ambient light. It's problem is that it often sets too small an aperture to do this effectively. I'm sure it does other things as well, but have yet to hear a good expaination of what. Anyway the problem it could give your Project-A-Flash is in setting an aperture other than wide open. You must want that if you are going for maximum distance, right? Anyway, if you just set the camera to Av mode, that should remove the problem with the A-TTL mode, I would think. You ought to try it and see what happens. Could save you $60+.

Ok after reading Jims Responce i put the 430 on the eos 1 I have 2 eos 1's and neither goes into TTL when put into AV or Tv both set really low shutter speed only way i can make flash usable is to put it in Manual Flash setting or put Camera in Manual Mode for TTL or program Mode on Camera and again have TTL is this a Flash Fault? Body Fault or am i Missing something i have the Magic lantern guide for the flash but find nothing about this in there

Thx

I guess I didn't make this clear. The 540EZ will switch to straight TTL in Av or Tv modes, but the 430EZ will not.

You have two choices that I can think of. Use Canon's Hot Shoe Adapter, which will always disable A-TTL or E-TTL schemes. Or set the camera in Av mode, in which case the A-TTL mode will still fire a near IR preflash but really does little or nothing to effect exposure. This is because the A-TTL (unlike E-TTL) preflash does not effect the flash exposure and should allow your Project-A-Flash to work well.
