What is with our country and the importance of Sports? The money we spend building stadiums, paying players, couldn't it be better spent?

Thing that puzzles me are the big business teams who scam the taxpayers into voting in a stadium that will be mostly paid for by tax money. Only to keep a team in town and let the owners make more money yet. Status symbols maybe?

Above all though is the hooliganism that seems to becoming the norm. Why ? ? ? ?
