The European single currency, the Euro, has fallen to a new record low against the dollar.

At one point in New York it was trading as low as eighty-two and a half cents, before recovering slightly.

The dollar is strong against all major currencies -- but the BBC business correspondent in New York says what surprises traders on Wall Street is the reluctance of the Europeans to defend the Euro.

Last month, the US Treasury joined the European Central Bank in intervening to prop up the Euro.

But our correspondent says few expect that it would do so again before the US presidential election in two weeks' time -- unless the situation becomes really desperate.

Yes, Martin, only question remaining is: how low is low? How low does it have to go before preciptating a market crash?
