Monterey County officials say that a new public information officer mistakenly told media that a mandatory evacuation had been ordered along the Salinas River north of King City due to a dam breach at Lake Nacimiento in northern San Luis Obispo County. Officials say the unnamed spokesman neglected to warn reporters that Monterey officials were conducting a drill and told reporters the fictitious scenario as if it had really happened.
