BCN25 -URGENT ADVISORY

Monterey County officials have ordered a mandatory evacuation along the Salinas River north of King City due to a dam breach at Lake Nacimiento in northern San Luis Obispo County. A spokesman for the Monterey County Office of Emergency Services says the breach occurred at 9:30 a.m. today. The high water mark is currently at the oil fields in San Ardo and is expected to reach San Miguel at approximately 11:22 a.m.

U.S. Highway 101 northbound is closed at Paso Robles and southbound at state Highway 198.

CORRECTION: It turns out this was only a drill "on paper" by the emergency management folks! However, some idiot PR person gave the story to the media as though it were really happening. The story was officially "corrected" on the news wire a little after it was released.

Does serve as a nice reminder of the threat posed by dams, though.
