Where can I buy DE?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Ok, dumb question, but I have called every place I can think of locally, and no one has diatomaceous earth, that was mentioned as useful to worm poultry and other livestock. The only type I found was for aquariums, and the clerk wasn't sure you could use it for anything else, plus it would be pretty expensive to purchase it that way. Where do those of you who use it, buy it? I was told to check with garden centers, but none here carry it. Thanks! Jan

Jan, I got mine at a preparedness expo last year, getting ready for Y2K. I did a search on the web, using diatomaceous earth as a phrase and got this source: http://www.conquestinc.com/ They're in Kansas. A couple others:

Thanks, I'll give those places a try. I really want to get some and try it, as so many on this site seem to think it works so well. Jan

Jan, We got a 50# bag from Azure...I think they have a web site. the price was really cheap too...

and you have to be sure to get human safe stuff...not pool or aquarium stuff.

It works! And the chickens and the goats eat it like candy.. We have to hide it from them!

As Cher said, make sure that you get the stuff for insect control, not for pool filter use, as the processing is different, and the resulting DE doesn't have the sharp edges that damage the inscects.

Hi! A swimming pool supply company would have just what you need. They need to lay DE below an above ground pool when they install it.

Peaceful Valley Farm supply in CA for out west, They have all sorts of gardening items at a reasonable price and they will ship. And Ohio valley Earth foods,I think that's the name, for back east.not as much variety, but good prices also. If you can't find them doing a search, let me know & I'll dig out the catalogues for addresses.

Jan, I get mine from Gardens Alive. They are real nice folks and have a very helpful little catalog. Their website is www.gardens-alive.com Their phone number is 812 537 8650. The other posts are correct to say that insecticidal or food grade DE is the kind you want, not pool chemical DE.

As of now I cannot get it locally but will be able to in january as I was not the only one that kept asking the local feed mill for it. They are going to start carrying it as they have had so many request. If you are buying livestock feed you might ask about them carrying it. You might also be able to special order it. Remember when you start ordering online or mailorder you will also have a shipping and handleing charge added on to the price of the product. gail

I have also ordered products from Gardens Alive and have been very pleased. It has been a while but they offered a coupon for $20 worth of free products and I ended up getting the DE that I ordered for free! I think the coupon was for the first order only, but I sure appreciated the great deal! By all means though don't use the pool stuff just to be on the safe side! Good Luck. Joy

I think I have a Gardens Alive catalog still, somewhere. Maybe I'll check that out and see if I can get it from there, before I explore any of the other avenues. Thanks for all the response, I can't wait to try it! Jan

I tried Home Depot and garden centers in my area. Could not find it or anyone who knew anything about it except for pool filters. Finally found it at the local co-op. They carry it and knew all about it. It's cheaper than ordering it because of shipping costs. This is my first time to try it on my goats, chickens, and pot belly pig. Hope it works as well as everyone says. Will let you know.
