Canon EF 135mm Softfocus Problem

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

Hi all,

I have recently taken a couple of shots using this lens with Soft Focus set to either 1 or 2. The resulting slides did not have the desired soft focus effect, instead they simply looked out of focus, so I throwed them away. I used a Canon EOS 1n on a tripod loaded with Fuji Provia 100F, shutter times were around 1/250 at f2,8 to f4. The subject was portrait.

Do you have any idea what went wrong here? BTW, I have never had any problems like this when I used the soft focus effect for landscapes, I always got this dreamy effect.

Any comment is greatly appreciated.

Sandra

Answers

use a smaller aperture like 4 or 5.6, the effect will be better

Sandra:

Were you using the lens in manual focus, or autofocus mode?

If you are focusing manually, you have to adjust the focus after setting the soft focus effect. If you don't, the subject will be out of focus.

I find it's generally easier to use the lens in AF mode, if possible, as the camera will then adjust the focus, which shifts considerably as the soft focus stting is changed.
