Explosion jolts Sydney suburb

The Associated Press

SYDNEY, Australia (October 24, 2000 12:23 a.m. EDT - A powerful explosion blew apart two restaurants and badly damaged homes, shops and offices Tuesday in a southern Sydney suburb. Nobody was injured.

Police described the 2 a.m. explosion as suspicious and launched an investigation. Officers with sniffer dogs sifted through the wreckage.

Broken glass and twisted metal littered the road outside the restaurants in the Sydney suburb of Brighton-le-Sands, close to Botany Bay.

The fire brigade and police evacuated nearby residents because of fears that a fire sparked by the blast would spread and badly damaged buildings might collapse.
