Grain Mill preferences and why

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I think I read a post about which grain mills everyone preferred or hated and why, but it was sometime ago and I can't find it. Would you all mind letting me know what brands were worth their salt or not and why? I make bread alot and am tired of buying expensive, not to mention old, flours at the grocery. However, I just can't justify $200 on a machine either. I am really good at looking for good bargains so if you have advice on places I might check to find good deals at, I'd appreciate that as well!

Hi Sonya, the Back to Basics Grain Mill from either Lehman's or Cumberland General Store catalogs works very well for small quantities of flour, and it cost around 32 dollars 2 years ago. I forgot which catalog I purchased it from, they might both have it, both advertise in CS. It is a hand crank with steel rollers. BTW, I have purchased hard, red wheat from the feed store, works just fine, although you have to pick through it before use like you would dried beans. I think it was about 3.75 for 50 pounds. Good luck! Annie in SE OH.
