Freighter runs aground in Quebec

A cargo ship from the Barbados is undergoing an inspection in Quebec City after running aground in the St. Lawrence River early Saturday morning morning.

At about 4:45 a.m. ET, the J.D. Mitchell, a 170-metre freighter that was carrying grain, lost all power.

The coast guard says after the generators on board shut down, the vessel lost all ability to manoeuvre.

It ended up stranded on what appeared to be appeared to be a sandbar or some flat rocks.

Crews transferred the ship's ballast from the bow to the stern, and with the help of the rising tide, two tugboats pulled the Mitchell free.

There was no obvious damage to the ship, no leaks and none of the 20 crew members was hurt.

Marine officials are inspecting the ship in Quebec City to see what repairs, if any, the Mitchell might need.
