Spring Fling/Summer Slam:Who,When & Where?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TB2K spinoff uncensored : One Thread

Well yaw'll,the idea got goin' on the LV pic thread and AB took it a step further,so I'm takin' it to the next level, with a new thread(besides,it was gettin' a bit long).

1. Select a general vicinity of where you would like us to gather.

2. What month is preferrable to you.

3. Is this a "SO" kind of event or should it be solo?

Any and All opinions are welcome and requested.

When these questions are answered we can move on to phase 2 of planning.

ARE YA READY FOR A PARTY?????? "I got the pig in the ground and the beer on ice and all my rowdy friends are comin' over tonight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" (sang to the Hank Williams JR football song)

Answers

U pick it. I'll be there.

-- Carlos (riffraff@cybertime.net), October 20, 2000.

Same here (and I'll be singing that HW Jr song all day!). In case we lose track of the old thread, here's the link.

I'd prefer someplace warmer, but as long as The Group is getting together, I don't really care. I'd say leave the "where" part up to those with a definite warm/cool climate preference.

-- Patricia (PatriciaS@lasvegas.com), October 20, 2000.

I forgot -- let me know if you want me to set up another Anexa site or whatever....I'll take care of it.

-- Patricia (PatriciaS@lasvegas.com), October 20, 2000.

After waking up this morning to a FREEEZING cold blast,...I am beginning to see the appeal of a warmer climate..but I implore you all to consider something at least half way up the coast... Florida is a LONG way off to us Northeners. (especially to the ONE of us who doesn't fly) Could we say that South Carolina would be nice state? Pretty please??

(WAsn't there someplace around there where you can camp on the beach? )

-- kritter (kritter@adelphia.net), October 20, 2000.

kritter,

That's two of us who don't like to fly. If Florida is chosen we could drive down together and share some good Manasquan stories!

As far as capn's questions go -

Anywhere is fine with me. I DO like the idea of a place to stay that provides alot of conversation time and cooking some meals together. I especially like the idea of a softball game. :)

Spring in the Poconos would not be freezing. It could provide some really beautiful days (along with some really wet ones!). However, someplace near the ocean sounds great too.

The only time I wouldn't be able to make it is one of the week-ends in June. My youngest is graduating from the 8th grade. I'm not sure which one that is right now.

Anita,

Thanks for posting the pics from LV. Everyone looks like they had a great time. You look so young! Where's Bingo? I thought we would have heard from him by now.

-- Debra (Thisis@it.com), October 20, 2000.

I'm really excited about this and I'll do what I can to help. As I'd already mentioned, some place green please. Month of May sounds good. It should be warming up and drying off by then.

And please please please...no pig in the ground =(.

-- cin (cin@=0.)), October 20, 2000.

First, the rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated.

I vote for Virginia(virginia beach or somewhere on the atlantic)-RIch could help us out there and I feel it is a good midway point for all of us east of the mississippi-lars, debbie, me, kritter-it would be easier for us than florida. The poconos sound good, too, but I know of an Inn north of the poconos in the endless mountains that is quaint and in a beautiful location-it also has two suites where we can cook-there is a chance we can get the whole place to ourselves if we have 30 or less. It is called the StoneBridge Inn:

http://www.stone-bridge-inn.com/2000/home.html

Take a look

-- FutureShock (gray@matter.think), October 20, 2000.

FS, welcome back!! How was New Orleans? Details, please :-)

Virginia (Beach) sounds great. Hey, I'll go along with anything, really. I'd like to see us all try to stay in the same inn/lodge/motel/whatever to make it easier and more fun.

-- Patricia (PatriciaS@lasvegas.com), October 20, 2000.

In way of organizing things a bit, this is a list of suggested locations which have been proposed so far...

New York City Hershey Pa.

Philly Cape May/Wildwood

Williamsburg, Va

Orlando

Myrtle Beach

Tampa area

Poconos in PA.

Washington, DC area. mid-coast; North or South Carolina

St Augustine

Virginia(virginia beach or somewhere on the atlantic)

"Unavailable" dates:

April 19th-23 & around the 20th of May -Unc D

"one of the week-ends in June" -Debra

-- CD (costavike@hotmail.com), October 20, 2000.

Capn'- Regarding your questions. Here are my preferences...

1. Select a general vicinity of where you would like us to gather.- Florida

2. What month is preferrable to you. - May

3. Is this a "SO" kind of event or should it be solo? - How 'bout a compromise Capn'? Being that I am currently single, I vote that the men should bring their SO and the ladies should go solo ;)

-- CD (costavike@hotmail.com), October 20, 2000.

If I'm actually invited to this thing, my selfish vote would have to be St Augustine. It's all of a 30 minute scoot down A1A.

2nd choice would be Myrtle Beach - golf course on every street corner there!

I'm not sure how easy it is to fly into Gulf Shores, Alabama (AKA: The Redneck Riviera) but that is one fun, beautiful place, right on the water.

I'm definitely in the "I'd rather drive than fly crowd".

FS,

Glad to to see ya made it back safely from "nawlans".BTW,while in Vegas I heard that we look like we could be brothers,it's got my curiosity up.What do you think?

CD,

I gots a good chuckle out of the TEOTWAWKI comment, good'n.

Regarding locations:Does anyone have any 1st hand info on Savannah Ga? Iv'e been told it's really cool and a great place to party/vacation.

I haven't made any travel plans for next year yet and am open to just about any time frame but am thinking that the 2cnd half of June would be good because it gives the spring rains/downpours a chance to subside.

-- capnfun (capnfun1@excite.com), October 20, 2000.

Cin,

We really wouldn't put the whole pig in the ground, just a few butts : )

-- capnfun (capnfun1@excite.com), October 20, 2000.

I went to Savannah once to visit a family friend, and I really loved it there. The waterfront area was beautiful, and I liked Tybee Island . It struck me more as a residential area though, than a tourist area.

In April/May...any beach area is still not going to be warm enough to be swimable except Florida, IMO, so the question is do the beach people want to be able to swim, or are they just looking for scenary?

-- kritter (kritter@adelphia.net), October 20, 2000.

Perhaps someone can create a list of each potential attendee and the major city closest to his/her home. This would allow the group to determine the city/airport that would involve the least amount of travel/expense to the group. Just a thought.

-- Ken Decker (kcdecker@att.net), October 20, 2000.

This is gonna be tough. We're spread out all over the place. I would vote for somewhere mid atlantic...like say Virginia Beach, been there it's really nice and I wouldn't have to fly.

Don't know about the SO going, CD says for the womens to leave them home (you're itching for a trip to the woodshed, young man;).

Let me know what y'all decide, then I'll see if I can fit it into my schedule..ha!

-- Peg (em@i.l), October 20, 2000.

Savannah is awesome. They host a St Patrick's Day celebration that is like a mini Mardi Gras. They dye the durn river green! Although March still has potential to be aweful damn cold in SE GA.

BTW - this is my first post from home, ever. Had to finally break down and buy a PC (YIKES!). Honestly, they have so many good deals with the rebates going on, it was too good to turn down!

Deano

-- Deano (deano@luvthebeach.com), October 20, 2000.

Deano,

Are you very familiar with Savannah? Do they have the type of set up I think were looking for ie,a place where we can all stay in our own rooms with effeciencies and congregate, like outside in a courtyard, around the pool or tiki bar?

Sinse it seems that coldness is playing such a huge factor to everyone, should we maybe shoot for sometime in last two weeks in June?

-- capnfun (capnfun1@excite.com), October 20, 2000.

Capn-

I did a double take when I saw your photo-though I only saw you in shadow, i thought I WENT to Las Vegas. I have cut my hair significantly since the photo i posted 5-6 months ago, but maybe close enough.

What gives?

-- FutureShock (gray@matter.think), October 20, 2000.

Hey capn!

Thanks for volunteering! You name the place and I'll show up for the giggles! Either May or June works for me. PAR--TEEE!!!!!!!

FS-

Welcome back! I checked our your recommendation on-line. The Stonebridege Inn is nice, but a coupla things. Only 13 rooms. Could be problematic if a large number of people decided to go. Also, non-smoking, except for the tavern and part of the restaurant. This could be a problem. One of the things I noticed in Vegas was the high number of smokers (5) and three ex-smokers (and two people weren't polled). Just my 2 cents.

But anywhere the group decides will be fine with me as long as I have time to plan ahead!

-- Aunt Bee (Aunt__Bee@hotmail.com), October 20, 2000.

capnfun

Somewhat familiar with Savannah. Been there a couple times but not recently. As kritter says, the riverfront is really nice. Plenty of places to stay along there. I don't rememeber any tiki bars (damn, we think alike!! I love tiki bars!!) but there were many B&Bs and Inns along the river. I'm sure large enough to accomodate a party of 30 or so.

I do remember the paper mills though....... If the wind is blowing the wrong way, we may be pointing fingers!!

Airlines in to Savannah?? Not a big city......

Deano

-- Deano (deano@luvthebeach.com), October 20, 2000.

Aunt Bee:

Did you notice the occupancy limits on those rooms? For most, the limit was set at 4 [having additional loft beds within the room], and at least one was set at 6. We'd never get a group large enough to fill that place. Only the LARGEST suite had accommodations for cooking, and the menu didn't exactly lift my skirt. Also, if we couldn't get the place for ourselves, they DO ask that we be quiet in respect of other guests. After last weekend, I doubt that would be possible.

-- Anita (Anita_S3@hotmail.com), October 20, 2000.

FS,

I musta somehow missed your pic dude, surely I would have remembered seeing such a face.Do you or anyone else have a link to those pics in photopoint? My curiosity groweth.

Hey B!!!

I gotta be good for somethin'! Besides, with a promise of some of your chili how could I resist?

Deano,

Maybe a key word search for tiki bars is in order : )

Moving up the coast, considering that Savannah "may" not have the air accomodations needed, how bout Charleston or say Myrtle beach? This area seems to be central to most on the east coast and sinse those on the west coast have to fly in anyway the fares should be approx. the same.

Speak up everyone,I'm not the party dictator.(reminds me of the soup nazi)

-- capnfun (capnfun1@excite.com), October 20, 2000.

My daughter graduates the weekend of June 15th. PLEASE make it ANY other weekend!

Speaking of tiki bars....The Southernmost Hotel (The actual hotel that is the farthest south in the USA, in Key West) has a KILLER tiki bar right by the pool. And the finest Bloody Marys. Choice Rum Runners. So fine Pina Coladas. Cold brews. Oh yeah, and rowdy behavior is a fact of life in Key West, I think the atmosphere sort of demands it. Now look what I've done, I've given myself vacation fever. Of course it is a long drive for those who are too CHICKEN to fly thousands of feet in the air without a net, but some of us like it, right Cappy?

Regards,

-- The Mogul of Mirth (unkeed@yahoo.com), October 20, 2000.

OK yaw'll,this is just a thought that ran through my mind.

I think we all know that there is one of us who's in a damn bad way right now, that person being Oxy,given her injuries she will not be going or doing much,if at all,for several months.I think it safe to say that under no circumstances will she be able to handle ANY heavy duty traveling, let alone the financial devastation this will in,at least, the short term cause her.

WHAT IF..... We took the party to her(the Tampa-ST. Petersburg area)? I know that this game plan causes some of us longer travel time and car rides for those that can't or won't fly and is not centrally located to the majority of us.But at least we are able.

As it happens I do know of a great little place on Treasure Island outside of ST.Pete that fits our needs ,"The Surf".

We could go visit Oxy and or fetch her back with us,it might be a very good thing for her to look forward to.

Just thinkin'....... now time for some drinkin' : )

-- capnfun (capnfun1@excite.com), October 20, 2000.

Deb,

Sorry, the pic was broken. Please, one mo time.

Unk,

You know me well and wev'e never even met.I have been there many times and allways had a blast.I bet you also know about the nekkid pier over at Atlantic Shores, they also have a killer tiki bar, with great scenery : )

-- capnfun (capnfun1@excite.com), October 20, 2000.

I think everyone would be happy with Myrtle Beach then...especially if you're talking about last week of June. (the temp would be about 80) There are Tiki Bars there, (in fact the "Freaky Tiki" is there) ...and plenty of hotels and restaurants, and it has it's own airport...Myrtle Beach International Airport, about 5 minutes from the area. It's mainly a Golf/Beach place..but there is are theaters, IMAX shows, a water park and theme park there too. You can rent Jet Skis and Catamarans. There is a Riverboat...Come on!!! It's centrally located to ALL of us....a 15 hour drive from me...I'm being FAIR HERE!

-- kritter (kritter@adelphia.net), October 20, 2000.

capn,

I don't think the pic is 'broken'. Works for me. Try again.

-- Debra (Thisis@it.com), October 20, 2000.

Thanks Debra!! It worked that time.

FS,

Now I remember seeing your pic! but somehow had you and CD crossed up??? got any pics with the long hair and beard? THAT would really fuck'em up : )

-- capnfun (capnfun1@excite.com), October 20, 2000.

As I said, I don't really care but.....the Treasure Island area is absolutely one of my favorite places on Earth. I've been there many a time and it's just a party atmosphere (one of my favorite restaurants is up the "coast" a bit in Indian Shores (Rock?) -- The Salt Rock Grill; KILLER king crab legs......drool.....[sorry, cin; call it a weakness]). I know of The Surf, though I've never been there. (Did have brunch at the Don Cesar once; wow.)

I've always wanted to go to Savannah (well, at least since I read and then saw Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil). There's an international airport, so that shouldn't be a problem.

If we're talking the coast of NC/SC, we're getting into $$$$$, unless it's "off-season" (pre-Memorial Day, I think).

Anyway.....wherever. It's the company that matters to me, not so much the place ;-) (good answer, P.)

-- Patricia (PatriciaS@lasvegas.com), October 20, 2000.

It would appear that everyone who wished to suggest a location has already done so. It would also appear that we have arrived at something of a stalemate as far as making a final decision. A suggestion which may help move things along...

By my count, there are at least 14 different locations which have been suggested. In my opinion, it would be helpful at this point if we could "narrow-down" our choices. By asking everyone to submit their top three preferences, we could then determine the three (or four or five) most commonly submitted preferences. Eventually we could vote on which one of those will be the chosen location.

I realize a number of people really don't care where we meet. (As Patricia said- "It's the company that matters to me, not so much the place".) But here's hoping everyone will contribute their preferences, even if they're not all that important to you. It will at least help us to get the ball rolling again.

Just my humble opinion. Whaddyathink?

FS & Cap,

Both of you guys resemble a San Francisco buddy of mine that always has so many women fighting over him that It gets depressing for an ordinary guy like me to be around him! I was amazed at the resemblence when I met Cap at dinner in L.V. on Friday night.

Cap, thanks again for the GREAT tasting wine! I can only drink a little these days, having apparently consumed my lifetime quota by age 40, so when I do occasionally indulge it is really nice to do so with a quality product!!!

CD, if you're single right now I know some cute cocktail waitresses at the Sahara...

Flint, Debra, Consumer, Kritter, Oxy, and all the rest of you East Coasters that couldn't make it to L.V., I can't wait to meet you all!

My only suggestions are that we meet in a place near an airport big enough to warrant some discount air fares, and that is not too cold at that time of year.

Best Wishes...

Sheeple, I forgot to include you and fellow mid-westerners in my "can't wait to meet" list above. Sure hope you can make it!!!

LOL Patricia. IF you get me drunk enough I might bore you with that story.

wow Cap and FS look like brothers!

Debra, can you please post a link to that old picture thread? Thanks =)

-- cin (cin@=0.)), October 22, 2000.

Yeah, not to throw a damper on this or anything, but I have to raise the issue of the proximity of a major airport to any location in the Poconos. If I'm not mistaken, the closest one (Scranton) is at least an hour-plus drive to most Pocono locations. If you fly into the NYC area, we're talking almost two hours. I don't know what the drive would be from the Philly area.

Additionally, the only airlines (according to the web site) that fly into Scranton are the commuter arms (usually smaller-type planes; props) of U S Airways, Comair, Continental Express, Northwest Airlines, and United Express. To get these flights, depending on where you're flying from, you'd probably have to fly into Philly or the NYC area. Not sure on this, so you'll have to check.

-- Patricia (PatriciaS@lasvegas.com), October 22, 2000.

As a practical matter, perhaps we should narrow the focus to those locations that have major airports, since we are coming from all over. While some are driving, most (it seems) are flying. Perhaps someone can check out the possibilities. Debra and Anita, what say you? You two seem to be our experts in the research areas...got time to check it out and get back to us???

-- Aunt Bee (Aunt__Bee@hotmail.com), October 23, 2000.

Tampa, St. Pete, Cool....

Anywhere myrtle beach, I'm gonna be there the 2nd week of May

Va. Beach, I love that place also

So MANY places, so lil time.

-- consumer (shh@aol.com), October 23, 2000.

OK, Savannah and Myrtle Beach both have their own airports, which bring in planes from the major airports nearby. (ie Atlanta) It would mean just transporting from your plane to a smaller plane for a short hop. Both have hotels and night life and beaches. Savannah will be a tad bit warmer than Myrtel. Myrtel will definately be more expensive then Savannah. The further into the season, the more it will be...thus...May will be cheap..June will be LESS cheap.

Here's some stuff in Savannah to consider: The Velvet Elvis night club...Club ONe, which is a gay drag club (hehe), and the Cinema Grill, where you can have dinner and watch a movie at the same time. Sightseeing River Boats..Bicycle rental places...and plenty of Cajun Bistros.

A Hotel to consider : The Mulberry Hotel here - 601 E Bay St (912/238-1200). Friendly Holiday Inn-owned hotel with B&B feel (free iced tea and cookies). Rooftop Jacuzzi, courtyard, and luxurious river-view rooms. $80-100. (Love the iced tea and cookies deal!)

Another nice one here Guesthouse Inn

If it wasn't almost 6 in the mornin' I might be thinkin' bout a shot of tequilla or 6!!!.

I'm wondering if this has anything to do with the picture and writing below. I've noticed that it has changed a few times during the last 20 minutes. It may not be you at all capn.

Does it always show up in view source after all postings?

-- Debra (Thisis@it.com), October 25, 2000.

The picture is gone now.

-- Debra (Thisis@it.com), October 25, 2000.

I don't remember Deb,they added the pics back Sun night when they were maintaining the servers. This particular thread though didn't have it,I don't think before tonight/this morning.Everything started to act funny when I started trying to post the second batch of links, the 1st error was definetly mine,it was obvious. Then after I reviewed my commands and they were ok I tried and tried etc. Then, just when I thought I had it whooped the center crap began.

What started out as a small mess snowballed into a Laurel and Hardy skit,FAST.Even though I don't think it's all my doin' I'm sure everyone will get a huge chuckle out of this fiasco.

-- capnfun (capnfun1@excite.com), October 25, 2000.

Oops ... it's back and it really is pretty interesting. I'm posting it here just in case it changes - :D

Aristophanes explaining homosexuality vs. heterosexuality...

Originally, people did not go about singly, but were physically joined together with another person. There were male-male, female- female, and male-female combinations. You had four legs, four arms, two faces, etc. and when you wanted to move fast you did it by cartwheeling. The Gods became angry with Man at one point and split all of these couples up, taking the extra skin and making belly buttons. People now wandered around desperately lonely looking for their old partners.

If you are a woman seeking women, you were originally intended to be part of a female-female pair; if you seek someone of the opposite sex, you were originally intended to be part of a male-female pair; if you are a man seeking a man (the most praiseworthy kind of person), you must have originally been intended to be part of a male- male pair. People who find the exact person for whom they were originally intended remain happily with that person for a lifetime; people who don't continue to search. Aristophanes cautions us to worship the Gods carefully; if they get angry again they'll split us all in half and we'll have to hop about on one leg. ...

Back to the saga of capnfun and the mysterious code ...

-- Debra (Thisis@it.com), October 25, 2000.

If I didn't,and I don't, know better I'd say the crew at MIT are havin' a big fuckin' time, tinkerin with this thread.

-- capnfun (capnfun1@excite.com), October 25, 2000.

Right now I'm about half tempted to set the margin "right" and see what happens, but the whole board might collapse and it would all be my fault : )

-- capnfun (capnfun1@excite.com), October 25, 2000.

italics off

-- capnfun (capnfun1@excite.com), October 25, 2000.

Yea, and if they are the Gods will become angry again, split them in half and they will only be able to play with us with ONE hand on the keyboard while we still have two! ROFL

Then capn WE become the code MASTERS!!!
