Problem with power substation in Central Islip causes outage The Associated Press 10/18/00 9:57 PM

CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (AP) -- Battery failure at a power substation in Central Islip resulted in a power outage that affected 17,500 customers Wednesday night, a spokesman for the Long Island Power Authority said.

The power outage started at 7 p.m. and lasted until 9:20 p.m. Wednesday in Islandia, Hauppage and Central Islip. Residential and commercial customers were affected, spokesman Bert Cunningham said.

"We had to isolate that substation and switch to alternate feeds from other locations to get power back to customers," said spokesman Bert Cunningham.

No hospitals or other emergency service care providers were affected, Cunningham said.
