Jeremiah,

Poe first became widely known for his literary critiques when he wrote for the Southern Literary Messenger magazine. He later won a prize of $100.00 for his story "The Gold Bug" but even this story did not gain him much exposure. For his short stories, it was his story "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" that clearly validated his principles relative to mystery tales but without doubt and without qualification, it was his poem "The Raven" that gained him the recognition he deserved. The poem created an excitement in literature that was unmatched by any previous American work and swept the country in reprints. Today, it is arguably the single most recognized poem written by an American author and is certainly the one poem most associated with his genius.

Regards,
