Sorry, but this sounds just a little too far-fetched to be real. Can anyone verify?

-- sheepish (rborgo@gte.net), October 17, 2000.

Madeline Murray O' Hare has een mising for several years and is thought to have been murdered. If the show is canceled it is probely due to poor ratings. I doubt Ms. O'Hare has this much power from "The Beyond"

-- Mark (deadgoatman@webtv.net), October 17, 2000.

This was in another thread here. I don't think it was specifically about the program, just that this issue came up within a thread -- you know how that happens.

It is an untrue rumor, an urban legend if you will. The website for "Touched by an Angel" mentions this letter(?) circulating on the Internet, and says it is totally false. You can go to their discussion board and read the discussions (apparently ad infinitum): http://www.touched.com/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcboard.cgi The main website for the show is: http://www.touched.com/

This snippet is from http://www.lava.net/~higak/chain/other/ohair.htm:

"The story behind this "petition" is this. In 1974 Jeremy Lansman and Lorenzo Milam petitioned the FCC to prevent religious organizations from receiving non-commercial educational broadcasting licenses. The petition (which was in fact numbered RM-2493) was denied by the FCC in 1975...twenty-five years ago.

Although she did in fact gain celebrity status by successfully challenging prayer in public schools, Madalyn Murray O'Hair (this is the correct spelling) never was involved in this petition effort.

The current version, which now mentions the popular CBS television program "Touched By An Angel" starring Roma Downey, came into being in November 1999. But the petition has survived for longer than that. This is an old chestnut that really needs cracking."

Rumors get on the Internet and NEVER seem to die out! Okay, so I researched it on the web. If anyone finds these sources I cited to be suspect, I suggest you research it for yourself, by whatever method you prefer.

-- Joy Froelich (dragnfly@chorus.net), October 17, 2000.

This lie was also sent to me by a good friend, who took it to be totally true. IT IS NOT! This has been circulating around for about 20 years in various forms. Please check out this site: www.wjmurray.com This is O'Hair's son, the one who left her organization and was 'disowned' by his mother, read his testimony, and also read about 2493. Please check out things of this nature before sending it on to others. I got in touch with my friend, she is now getting in touch with the others that she had sent it to and is telling them that it is NOT true and they should check the site I mentioned above. Blessings to all and have a wonderful day! :)

-- Phyllis (almostafarm@yahoo.com), October 17, 2000.

If you want to check these e-mails out that you receive go to : www.snopes.com or www.urbanlegnds.com on "snopes" has what is currently being circulated, & if it is true or false/ on this subject it says it is false!!! I keep this address to send to those who presist in sending e-mails without checking them out! To me it is like spreading gossip/ if we don't stop the false e-mails. If you receive an e-mail of this type --check it out/ if you know the person is an honest person who just didn't know/ send them the web sites where they can check them out! Sonda in Ks.

I am finished supporting this alert. It makes Christians look bad and gullible. I have had warnings like this at least a dozen times. Sorry!

-- Aagje Franken (Backyard@AOL.com), October 17, 2000.

I will sign any and every petition like this. It only takes a few seconds to sign my name. And this petition started by an organization in her name, not by the woman personally. Thanks for posting this.

-- Judy Livengood (allsmile@ctnet.net), October 18, 2000.

I recently read/heard/? that politicians/legislators (state and federal government ones)do not take online petitions seriously. It's too easy to instantly sign a name and pass it on, apparently. They figure not enough people take enough time to think about the issue. I never sign 'em anyway. If something comes up that's of interest to me, I figure out some other way to get the information and then take action. Sending your own email is more powerful than an online petition.

-- sheepish (rborgo@gte.net), October 18, 2000.

Judy, I suggest you read all the responses before you sign this petition. It is a HOAX, possibly started by someone to make the signers look ignorant and foolish!

Sheepish, I have heard the same thing. A phone call or, even better, a letter will get their attention. Supposedly, an hand-written letter will get the most attention.

-- Joy Froelich (dragnfly@chorus.net), October 18, 2000.

Christians are bad and gullible! I am one who happens to not be. Don't take that the wrong way, most of the population around us are idiots....that's part of why rural homesteading appeals to me so much. The fewer people I have to deal with the better, and at least in the South alot of the stupid people are friendly. Who would post a forward on this site??? If you were in my email I would block any future messages. Come on! I guess this should be in pet peeves, too. Is there anyone left that verifies the truth of something before they go repeating it??? Where are those Eugenics programs of the 40's to "bring back the pioneer blood", when you need them.

-- JC (survivors00@hotmail.com), October 19, 2000.

JC, honey cause I'm a Christain doesn't make me bad or gullable--that is what I am, if I am---- being a Christain isn't what makes me that!!! I don't judge what you are, or aren't because, you are not a Christain! Judgeing is up to someone else --not me! Ok, brother?????? I prefer not to be classified! Ok???? I respect how you believe--so please don't judge me/ & respect me! Ok? Thanks!!!! Sonda in Ks.

-- Sonda (sgbruce@birch.net), October 19, 2000.

Sonda, ya I know you're right. I'm not judging you, I just have alot of very BAD experiences in the church with moronic people that call themselves Christians. I don't really think all Christians are like that, it's more of just an inside joke my wife and I use. Although I have heard some preachers refer to Christians in some pretty derogatory ways....but that's just people in general. Christians just get a bad rap easier, because they/we are supposed to be different and alot of times we aren't. I can speak with some experience on this as I was raised in a Christian home went to 13 yrs of Christian grade school and 5 yrs of Christian college. I'm sorry that I offended you. Christian or not though, none of us should be posting forwards or sending them to others without verifying the facts, which is very easy to do.

-- JC (survivors00@hotmail.com), October 19, 2000.

PS. I just read your post again and see that you misunderstood my meaning. I guess I could have worded it different. I meant that I was a Christian who wasn't bad or gullible. Sorry for the mixup.

-- JC (survivors00@hotmail.com), October 19, 2000.

I love touched by a angel, It is so nice to see a positive program. And they dont push any one typ of religion.

definitly a hoax paste this in you browser and you'll see the truth http://www.google.com/search?q=Madeline+Murray+O% 27Hare&btnG=Google+Search

-- L. Haddadin (hubla41@hotmail.com), November 30, 2000.

Oh my goodness, I can not believe this one is still even around!!! Good old what's-her-name has actually gone missing for quite a while now. Must be someone is trying to bring her back. Poor confused women has been blamed for everything, but I never saw anyone hardly lift a finger to fight her when it was all going on.

-- diane (gardiacaprines@yahoo.com), November 30, 2000.

this is not true. MM O'Hare was found recently with her granddaughter and grandson, all murdered. Read "my life as an atheist" by her son, who became a christian minister. great reading!

-- gloria j geary (gloria@mistymountainview.com), March 10, 2001.

I think it makes sense for people to do their homework before blindly signing their name to something. Would you sign your name on a contract without knowing what it was or evening reading it over? Doing a single search on Yahoo.com on this subject returned numerous results from various sources stating that this rumour is NOT true.

I chose to do my homework before signing my name to the petition. Turns out it was a big waste of time.

-- Justin Lumsden (justinl@klevr.com), March 10, 2001.

O'Hair thing is a HOAX. There is a Christian website dedicated to exposing Internet hoaxes. It is www.heavenlyminded.org/truth. I would suggest checking out any online petition there before signing anything. Christians are supposed to be as "wise as serpents, and harmless as doves"! Matt 10:16

-- Bonnie (stichart@plix.com), March 13, 2001.

Things like this will never die out until the perpetual crop of paranoid types die out.Oh well it gives us lotsa laughs.

-- jz (oz49us@yahoo.com), March 13, 2001.

Has anyone found a site anywhere that actually has any information on who murdered her and her family? Or haven't they solved it as yet? I did a search and all I found were a bunch of christian sites that still don't know she's been dead for years, or that this is a hoax.

-- julie f. (rumplefrogskin@excite.com), March 14, 2001.

Madyln has been dead for awhile now. About a month ago on the news on the radio it was reported her remains were found. Didn't keep track of story but do recall hearing she was dead. also, forgot the addy to website but there is a website that will let you know which e- mails are hoaxes or not.

Touched By An Angel Petition Is A Hoax

Many people may have seen or received an email from an anonymous person which claims that Madalyn Murray O'Hair's organization, American Atheists, filed a petition to have CBS's "Touched By An Angel" program cancelled. Some websites actually have pages that not only make this claim, but which have email petitions that users can fill out and send the government. After a tiny amount of research, it became evident that this is a hoax, much like the old "Proctor and Gamble President is a member of the Church Of Satan" hoax that continues to resurface from time to time.

For those who don't remember, a similar chain letter got started in the early 1980's, before the Internet, which accused Proctor and Gamble of being linked to the Church Of Satan, and alluded to an episode of the Phil Donahue show (which in later incarnations of the chain letter was changed to Oprah Winfrey, then to Sally Jesse Raphael) where the president of Proctor and Gamble allegedly admitted on television that he was a Satanist, and that profits from Proctor and Gamble go to the Church Of Satan. If you go to Proctor and Gamble, and then to the Oprah Winfrey websites, they have announcements about this chain letter being a hoax, and the Urban Legends Archive located at: Http://www.urbanlegends.com/products/procter_and_gamble_lawsuits.html has more info on this. Apparently an Amway employee started the whole thing.

For those of you who knee jerked at the content of the " Touched By An Angel" e-mail, you'll be happy to know that American Atheists, the organization not mentioned by name, is indeed real and is indeed fighting for your constitutional rights even as you read this. If this sounds a little unreal to you rest assured I know how you feel; I get the same feeling when someone tells me they are trying to save my soul. Mrs. O'Hair, however, is dead. She was murdered a few years ago. The fact that the e-mail mentions her in the present tense suggests that the information is outdated, or a complete fabrication.

Now, back to the fiction. Petition Number 2493 is a hoax. It's been around for a while evidently, and they discuss it at their web sites;

http://www.atheists.org/visitors.center/index.html

http://www.fcc.gov/cib/consumerfacts/Religious.html

In closing, I'd like for you to consider why it might be that a Supreme Court, which has never been made up of anyone but Christians and Jews, might think that prayer in schools is such a harmful idea. Certainly the atheists don't like it, but why would anyone, especially a believer, go so far as to outlaw school prayer and government involvement in religion as a whole? Could it be that letting religion and government mix is a scheme that might do harm to both? I suspect they fear, and rightly so, that government sponsorship or support for any religion will inevitably lead to the religious freedom of those of different beliefs being compromised. And just as you might have feared that one television program being removed might well lead to others being removed as well, so the Supreme Court is concerned that the loss of freedom for some means the loss of freedom for all.

I have no intentions what so ever of trying to keep even one person from believing whatever they wish, indeed I would fight, kill, and die, to make sure they had that right. That's what the government is for, to protect such rights. But to suggest that the government owes any particular faith or belief a platform on which to broadcast, whether it be email or a public school, is counter to the belief of freedom.

-- Psycho Dave (Psycho@weirdcrap.com), June 13, 2001.

"Touched by an angel", huh? LOL that show has mixed up more christians about what the Bible says about angels, than anything else has lately. Guess it just shows that christians tend to watch their TVs more than they read their Bibles.

The petition is a hoax anyhow.

May God grant that Hollywood would get out of the religious show business, anyhow. A mixture of spirits always comes through in anything they produce, except for the pure evil that comes out in x- rated movies. And this proves the total depravity of the spirit of Hollywood. We as christians would do well to take the sledgehammer to the hypnotising black box that we have allowed to take center place in our living rooms. Whatever happened to the family altar of Christian worship anyhow? Guess affection was transferred to the godless entertainment that is brainwashing this country into accepting our fate as a modern Gomorrah.
