How to care for artificial chickens?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Ok, I know this is odd, but my mother just gave me two artificial chickens for my birthday. I had seen them in a craft shop, and commented that they were made from real chicken feathers, and I guess she thought I wanted them. Anyway, it's really dusty here, and I'm concerned that putting them out on the shelf will ruin them eventually. Any thoughts as to how I can keep dust from ruining the feathers? Someone suggested I spray them with anti-static spray to make it easier to dust them--I don't want to mat the feathers down, but not sure how to make them "dustable" so that I can use a feather duster or something light on them occasionally without ruining them, as they look pretty fragile. Thanks for any ideas! (Like I needed another chicken around here!) Jan

Maybe using one of those compressed air cans for computers would take care of the dust problem.

Thanks for the laugh!!!

I always get dizzy when I dust. (I blow the dust off the stuff on the shelves) Seriously, you could take them outside and blow the dust off of them, like a feather duster.

Jan, I have owned Antique shops for about a 100 years now (ha) & take a blow dryer & put the setting on cool & blow the dust off/ if you need less air use an infuser on the dryer. That is how I have dusted alot of things for many years!!! Sonda in Ks.

Try wrapping the chicken closely in nylon net then vacuuming holding the nozzle a short distance away from the chicken. The net will keep from ruffling her feathers but you get rid of the dust.

Hey, ya'll! I not only know when Jan's birthday is, I know which one it is but I'd better not tell. Jan not only knows the same about me, she knows where I live. Happy birthday Jan!

Thanks for the ideas, everyone! (And thanks for the bd wishes, Marilyn!) I was hoping my mother would get me a manual pasta maker, as I had told her that was the only thing I could think of that I needed, but maybe I will use the cash they put in my card for that! Hubby thought they had gone off the deep end, getting me fake chickens! They are pretty, though. Jan
