philosophical questions : LUSENET : It's Always the Quiet Ones : One Thread

If a tree falls in the woods and noone is there does it make a sound?

And if I don't show up for a midterm do I really fail?

Nope. It's like the psych class that people I know are taking. They start the semester with 150 points. On the tests, for each question they miss, they lose a point, and can watch their pretty A slipping away. If they never take an exam, they never have a chance to lose any points. Or at least that's what I think. So I'm sure we can transfer some form of that logic to your midterm!

Oooh, I'm taking a philosophy class. Its fun. How's this?

Have you ever wondered whether other humans have minds, or just you?

i just want to know why the girl in our music class won't stop nodding.

Its because she has no fucking clue what's going on but wants to appear smart and intimidate the rest of you who may or may not have a clue . . . or may just not be paying attention because you are mocking her

It all depends on what you label as "reality". If you take an objectivist standpoint and say that reality simply "is", and that it is the human's job to observe reality, and not add to it with illusion, the tree did make a sound; there just wasn't a human around to notice this sound. If you take a solopsist standpoint, and say that reality is a fabrication of the individual human mind, the tree didn't make a sound, because the human mind didn't observe it; and anything that the human mind doesn't observe doesn't exist.
