Everybody prepping for Armageddon?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TB2K spinoff uncensored : One Thread

Forum very slow today. Most people post from work, but still slower than normal.

I imagine some of the wiser people might be out replenishing their Y2K stocks in light of the imminent threat of economic meltdown, acts of terrorism, and possibly WWIII.

This thought occurred to me because I just ran out of sugar today. That would be the sugar that I bought last year for Y2K. Turns out honey works quite well, especially in coffee. My stocks are otherwise holding out pretty well, thought I think before this winter hits it would be a good idea to take inventory and replenish some important items.

I look at my cuboards full of food and I think it was one of the smartest things I ever did. The price of most of what I bought is now nearly double for many items. Good investment, and gives me a sense of security too.

Best wishes in your prepping activities as we head into a very uncertain and volatile new millenium in 2001.

Imminent threat? That's what you stooges were saying last year. Take your foolish paranoid backside out into the sunlight and try enjoying life - twit...

You are in the wrong forum, Salt.

This is the New DeBunkie's, where all the big name polly-trolls hang out, now that Biffy's and the original DeBunkie's are both shut down.

If you really are a prepper (for "whatever"), you'll find a VERY hostile environment on this board. Suggest you leave now, before CPR has you arrested/tortured by the FBI for sedition (or whatever).

-- (ucantune@piano.butnotafish), October 15, 2000.

I've been on this forum for 3 years, and it is NOT the new Debunkies. Mental defectives like CPR and Pro are not taken seriously here, they just waste space.

-- Salt N Prepa (cpr @ is. bonkers), October 15, 2000.

Blessed are the peacemakers. Unfortunately, there are none here. ;)

Howdy Salt. As a debunker, for some reason I have lost my intinct and desire to "kill." I found your post friendly in tone. Funny thing, though I thought it a waste of time to prepare for y2k by stockpiling(and was proven right), I now have a much better appreciate for being prepared by stocking resonably for any emergency, whether its someone in need, ice storms, hurricanes, etc.

I do agree with cpr and pro however, that what we have seen in the news thus far is not exactly earth shattering. Violence in the middle east? When has it not been there, its a matter of degrees. Sure it could escalate into a war, and probably will one day, but thats far from us, JQ Public in the contenental US isn't exactly likely to have bombers flying overhead. Turn off the TV, turn off the radio, and see how peaceful it can be. Nothing alarming that I can see...

-- FactFinder (David@bzn.com), October 15, 2000.

FactFinder,

I am not trying to fabricate fearful scenarios where they do not exist. I am not however, one of the people who subscribe to the theory that if something has not happened before it cannot happen.

It is easy to let down your guard after something like Y2K turns out to be a dud, but the times they are a changing. A lot of people do not like the U.S. getting involved in their affairs, as evidenced by the recent attack on the Cole. The terrorists have thus far shown restraint by only launching relatively small attacks such as the World Trade Center, TWA 800, and the Cole. But since the U.S. wants to be the leader in the movement toward global domination, the attacks are likely to get more intense. It would be just as easy for terrorists to launch major attacks on large U.S. population centers using biological warfare, etc.

I think it is more realistic to be ready for this possibility than to pretend it can't happen.

"I've been on this forum for 3 years, and it is NOT the new Debunkies."

No, it's not - but it's not the old forum either. The vast majority of your Tinfoil friends have slunk off into parts unknown when their apocalyptic fantasies didn't pan out. Free discourse is allowed here - unlike the old forum - so you better be able to put up, or shut up. "I imagine some of the wiser people might be out replenishing their Y2K stocks in light of the imminent threat of economic meltdown, acts of terrorism, and possibly WWIII. "

"

I am not trying to fabricate fearful scenarios where they do not exist" Yes, I think you are, I think people like you constantly look at the world situation and imagine (and secretly hope for) the very worst. There is no imminent threat of economic meltdown - is there? If you have some proof, I'm all ears!

There is no imminent threat of WW111- is there? Another dust-up in Israel - no worse than a dozen times in the last twenty years. If you have some proof that the end is around the corner, I'm all ears!

As for "acts of terrorism", I am far more concerned with white-wing kooks (Oklahoma City)who fantasise about TEOTWAWKI then I am about the constant threat from the Bin-Laden kooks.

No, folks like you need to turn off their computer, walk outside and revel in the majesty of the world we live in. Then you need to give you head a shake and wake up...

How exactly does stocking your cupboards full of food prepare you for a terrorist attack?

And how exactly do you prep for Armageddon anyway? (Other than in the religious way)

Duuuuh, did it ever occur to you that after they spray your town with anthrax it might be difficult to get food and water that isn't contaminated? Or if they blowup our power grid?

How does one blow up our power grid?

Gaaawd you are dumb!! Do you have to have everything explained to you?

There are an infinite number of ways to take down a major power station. If you do several of the key ones simultaneously, the entire grid collapses, and it doesn't come back up.

-- (were.you@born.yesterday?), October 16, 2000.

In what was an otherwise a good news story about Y2k and electric utilities last November was this admission of non-Y2k electricity concerns.

http://www.info-sec.com/y2k/99/y2k_112099a_j.shtml

Possible cyber or physical attacks by extremist groups are a concern and utilities will increase security amid fears some groups may strike on Jan. 1 for religious or other reasons.

"The electric utility industry is Y2K ready. It is not an engineering problem any more, it is a people problem," said John Castagna, a spokesman for the Edison Electric Institute, which represents U.S. investor-owned utilities.

THREATS TO COMPUTER AND PHYSICAL SECURITY

A security adviser at a major Midwestern utility warned that possible threats to the grid could come from groups such as White Supremacists seeking to launch a race war or others seeking to profit financially from grid problems.

"You have a whole gamut of people who pose a threat to the grid for a variety of reasons, from financial to political," said the security expert, who asked not to be identified. He said there were recent attempts to break into his company's computer systems, including a four-minute attack from a Korean University in which virtually all the company's ports were scanned as hackers searched for a back door into the system.

"We have attempts from all over the world every day," he said, adding that some utilities plan to sever links on the Internet for a few hours on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day while many others are likely to remain connected but watchful.

"There is some thought that with the increased vigilance someone who wants to do mischief may just wait," he said.

Which stations are the "key ones?"

-- (hmm@hmm.hmm), October 16, 2000.

I don't know, but if they take down New York, Chicago, and LA, we would be in a world of hurt. I have heard there are some major providers somewhere in the midwest that are a key link in the grid. Why, are you planning to do this? Let me know in advance so I'll be sure to check my batteries, etc.

-- (hmmm@pretty.dim), October 16, 2000.

And in case anyone was wondering, I am a paranoid sack of dung who is frightened of the dark, loud noises and black cats. I also believe every conspiracy theory that comes down the pike - lock and load!

No, I just wanted to determine if you actually knew what you were talking about. Apparently, you don't.

Doomer Twitface,

I am not the one who is frightened, I am prepared. Judging by the hostility in your response, I would guess that it is YOU who are frightened. Didn't mean to scare you, but it is important to be aware of the reality of such possibilities.

Hmmmmm,

I do not know which power stations would be the key targets, but I can guarantee you that many terrorists do.

You are the fool who has changed the subject from preparing for the very real possibility of terrorism, to how one goes about executing such an act. I never claimed to be an expert on how to commit terrorism, idiot.

-- Salt N Prepa (Doomer Twitface @ scaredy. cat), October 16, 2000.

I do not know which power stations would be the key targets, but I can guarantee you that many terrorists do.

Yes, of course you can. You can read their minds. LOL.

You are the fool who has changed the subject from preparing for the very real possibility of terrorism, to how one goes about executing such an act.

I was simply determining whether or not you understood what it was that you were supposedly preparing for. As I said before, the evidence you have presented indicates that you don't.

-- (hmm@hmm.hmm), October 17, 2000.

"I am not the one who is frightened, I am prepared."

Why are you preparing? You have said: "in light of the imminent threat of economic meltdown, acts of terrorism, and possibly WWIII. without providing any basis that there is a smidgen of anything besides paranoia behind your assertions.

Again, I ask you to provide some evidence that WW111 is ready to start or that an economic meltdown is imminent or that terrorism will peronally affect you. Still waiting...

-- Y2K Pro (y2kpro1@hotmail.com), October 17, 2000.

"provide some evidence that WW111 is ready to start"

You first...provide evidence that it ISN'T ready to start.

Pray for whirled peas!

-- observer (watching@crossroads.com), October 17, 2000.

Ah, no, "observer", the burden of proof lies with the one who stated the original claim.

BTW, I noticed the following question still had not been answered (much to my surprise ;-)):

How does one "prepare" for Armageddon?

-- Patricia (PatriciaS@lasvegas.com), October 17, 2000.

I don't know bout armageddon, hell I'm still getting over Vegas, but I am prepping for the spring fling, believe me,you do NEED to prep yourself.

-- capnfun (capnfun1@excite.com), October 17, 2000.

No arguments here, capn; kind of still getting over the weekend myself. (I did make it into to work yesterday, BTW; thought that was pretty impressive :-))

Soon as I can I will starting preparing for the spring fling.

-- Patricia (PatriciaS@lasvegas.com), October 17, 2000.

I think "observer" was just making a joke. You know, using the same famous doomer argument of demanding proof of a negative ("Prove the world won't end. Aha!!!!")

-- (hmm@hmm.hmm), October 17, 2000.

Uh, my bad (still getting over that "weekend" thing; yeah, that's it). Consider it retracted.

While we're at it, though:

Well, Salt, I must be batting 1.000 today. See (and apply) the response directly above yours.
