possible sulution to small threshing machines

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Have been thinking of the post not to long ago wanting a small thresher for a limited amount of grain. One of the answers mentioned old combines for around $500. Was wondering as back in history the threshing machines were stationery and the grain was brought to it. Could you not just park the combine and bring the grain to it and just use it for a threshing machine. To make it take less room you could even take off the big cutting part. I don't know if this would work and would think to keep it running you would have to be fairly good with mechanics but might be a solution to getting a thresher that would work for a small homestead. gail

Might could use an old combine, but if your needs are of homesteader proportions why not build one? I have plans for a home built thresher posted at:

I haven't been able to scan and post the pictures but the directions and materials list are all there. If you can lay hands on a copy of Gene Logsdon's "Small Scale Grain Raising" the complete set of instructions is in the back of that book.
