what is important

greenspun.com : LUSENET : What keeps you up at night? : One Thread

With the demands of business, team building and constantly thinking how to grow for the future, It is not easy to keep sight of personal growth within these collosal goals.

How does one keep sight of self, goals, achievements without loosing sight of what is important?

Demands are extream when you are an entrepreneur. None is infront. You lead and it's lonley.

How do you do it?

Nadine, who taught you that your life is a chariot race and that your body is a horse. Yes, a part of life is how well we cope with suffering but life isn't about the deliberate creation of suffering.

Personal growth is a collosal goal and learning to let go and let the horse graze and the chariot be repaired is just as important as those who can afford to sit and watch you perform.

Somewhere in the design of your life I think you decided that you get by skipping two important things. Vision and Foundation.

Your eyes and minds were stuck in you for a reason, so that it the foundation of where everything starts and returns in your life, instead you driven by just two things, mission and values.

That Nadine, is not enough to get you what you want. No wonder its tough to lead and no wonder its lonely. Vision means the ability not just to see but to see yourself in the big picture, to be the orchestra and not the slave of your being.

Yes business is about helping others, but it isn't about propping others up, its not about carrying them from point A to point B, its about teaching them how to walk, teaching them how to walk and its also about letting go and having the confidence that the world won't shatter if you are not the one holding it.

Get more opinions than just what I have said Nadine, but ultimately paint yourself in the pictures of life you are creating, don't create masterful art and leaving completely so that you are unable to enjoy your own creation. Paint, reflect and enjoy.

So what is important? OK lately I have even been skipping exercising and looking after my body but after what I said to you today Nadine, you bet that I will be looking after myself, maintaining and eating a whole lot better. See that's the real point behind helping others out, that you don't forget that first you have to help yourself out.

Hi Nadine, EEK... What's important? Keeping focus.

People think that keeping focus means thinking only of the "task at hand", but to me, keeping focus means keeping the big picture in focus. One of the things I do is read a lot of non-work related books (eg. right now I'm reading The Dancing Wu Li Masters by Gary Zukav). I choose to take public transit to many places just so I can read on the trip. Spending time with my kids always helped me keep balance before, but they aren't here right now, so I spend a lot of time on the phone with them! Religion is also a really important touch stone to me. My faith has changed and evolved over the years, but the fact that I have faith in SOMETHING really hasn't. Keeping a certain amount of ritual in life, which includes prayer or meditation or some other form of "connecting with the divine" makes a huge difference in the ability to keep things in focus.

Having said all that, and sounded like such a champ and all, I should mention that my life has been somewhat out of focus and out of balance over the past year, so maybe I really have no clue. :) Things are definitely getting back on track, though!!! So I think what I've said has some value.
