Friday October 13 3:08 AM ET Explosion Rocks British Embassy in Yemen

ADEN (Reuters) - An explosion rocked the British embassy in Yemen on Friday but there were no immediate reports of casualties, a Yemeni official said.

The official told Reuters the blast occurred in the courtyard of the embassy in the capital Sanaa. He had no further details.

British Ambassador Victor Henderson told BBC radio: ``It's not clear yet. It could have been (a bomb). It could have been some technical fault in the generator which exploded, but it is going to take a little while for us to nail that down.

``Our emergency generator, which is located near the wall of a block which houses our political and commercial section, including my office, exploded at about 6:10 local (time),'' Henderson said.

``People have certainly steamed up at what has been happening to their Arab brothers in the territory,'' he said,'' referring to a grave escalation of violence between Palestinians and Israelis, ``but I would not have thought they would go to such lengths.

``If it turns out that this was an explosive device that would certainly be worrying,'' he added.

The embassy explosion came a day after a blast tore into a U.S. Navy destroyer in Yemen's main port Aden, killing six American sailors and leaving 11 missing in what President Clinton (news - web sites) called a ``despicable and cowardly act.''
