Thank you Suzy - re: Smoke Detectors

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

As the result of Suzy's posting on smoke detectors, I checked mine. Both were wired into the circuits. I found one not working. The other one worked, but not without power. I have replaced both with electric powered ones, but they have a battery backup. A good procedure is to replace the batteries twice a year when the time changes. They can be used for other purposes.

You're welcome!!! I hope you never have to rely on those smoke detectors going off...but at least now you know they'll work!!!

Ken, You weren't the only one. I normally do it when the clocks change. After reading her post I went pushing test buttons, 4 out of 6 failed. Found out my son has been "saving money on batteries " for his RC car.

I change my batteries too, with the clock changes herein the US.

This past week the furnace repair fellow (it was beyond my skills) says we have to have a new one, but in the meantime I could use the old one during the day "just might not use it at night due to the crack in the firebox". Well, after he left I disconnected it but good! And he still hasn't called for an estimate, but I wouldn't have him install a new one with the attitude that if you're awake a fire is no problem! So I'm looking at a new expense, yet am thinking it will be good to have no pilot light and burning at 90% efficiency.

Thanks for the reminder. I will replace the 10 year old sensor in the basement now.
