Scotland: 20 hurt as train is derailed By Auslan Cramb

MORE than 20 people were hurt last night when a train carriage was derailed in the south west of Scotland. The passengers escaped from the overturned carriage at Glenluce and were taken to a nearby farmhouse before being checked at Garrick Hospital in nearby Stranraer. None of them was seriously injured.

The two-carriage Sprinter train was travelling from Newcastle to the ferry port when the accident happened shortly before 6pm. A spokesman for Dumfries and Galloway Police said the second carriage remained on the line. He added that it was too early to speculate on the cause of the accident.

Colin Meldrum, 39, who works on a nearby farm, said: "The line at this point is on an embankment. When the carriage uncoupled and toppled over, it landed on trees. This saved it from dropping about 40 feet. Everyone on board was very lucky."
